While Collingwood fought out a draw against Essendon on Anzac Day, a Magpies father-son prospect helped lead the Western Jets to a thumping win in the Coates Talent League.
Thomas McGuane, who is the son of 1990 Collingwood premiership player Mick, produced an eye-catching display for the Jets in a 149-point triumph over Northern Territory Thunder last Thursday.
McGuane racked up 38 disposals, 10 marks, nine inside-50s, four clearances and kicked one goal for a total of 171 SuperCoach ranking points.
The Keilor product – who does not turn 17 until August – also recorded 22 score involvements in the Jets’ 24.21 (165) to 2.4 (16) victory.
McGuane is a father-son prospect for Collingwood in 2025, with his dad having played 152 games for the club.
“He’s had some midfield time this year, which has been a good chance to get his hands on the footy,” Western Jets talent manager Luke Williams said of McGuane.
“He got some rewards statistically on the back of playing the right way and he certainly brings other players into the game.
“He’s a footballer in every essence of the word. He’s been taught the ins and outs of the game since he was in a nappy, I’m sure, from the old man. But he has incredible footy IQ and he’s very creative with the ball. That sort of stuff will translate to any level of footy, really.”
Many of this year’s top draft prospects did not feature in the Coates Talent League over the weekend, instead lining up for the AFL Academy, Vic Country or school football teams.
However, there were some other standout performers in their absence.
Northern Territory Thunder ruckman Taj Murray logged 18 disposals, 28 hit-outs (13 to advantage), eight clearances and six tackles for 219 ranking points in his side’s match against the Tasmania Devils on Sunday.
Sandringham Dragons key forward Bailey McKenzie also had a monster match on Sunday, racking up 23 disposals, 13 marks (six contested), 18 score involvements and 7.3 in his side’s 114-point win over the GWS Giants Academy.
