Carlton’s biggest headache this time last year was whether Matthew Kennedy and George Hewett could play in the same midfield group.
The Blues had won five on the trot and were six points clear in second place on the ladder.
Only Sydney was preferred by the bookmakers as the likely 2024 premiership side.
An early-season injury storm had been weathered, and the return of Adam Cerra from a run of hamstring issues had pushed Hewett into the VFL and given the appearance of enviable depth.
But whether it was real or an illusion, whatever Carlton was building began to crumble after its trip north to face GWS in round 17 last year.
