Carlton was approached to consider a shock trade for Ollie Wines.

The Blues are conscious of their need for speed and instead remain committed to trade targets Tom Papley, Jack Martin and Eddie Betts.

Sources familiar with the left-field approach — which came around two weeks ago — said it came from the Wines camp, rather than the Power.

Port officials have this year repeatedly denied Wines was up for trade. He is contracted at Alberton until the end of 2022.

The strong-bodied onballer endured a difficult 2019 season, managing only 12 games. He dislocated a shoulder while water-skiing in the pre-season; broke a leg in round seven and then broke a thumb in round 17.

Wines grew up in Echuca as a mad Carlton supporter. His great uncle Clinton Wines played 39 games for the Blues between 1945—1946, including the “Bloodbath” 1945 VFL premiership.

Port Adelaide football manager Chris Davies last month telling the Herald Sun: “Ollie isn’t asking for any of this to be spoken about, he hasn’t suggested he wants to go anywhere, we don’t want him to go anywhere.

Wines, 25, has played 141 games for the Power since being taken at pick 7 in the 2012 national draft.
