Carlton forward Brendan Fevola ha's had enough chances, says Mike Sheahan

BRENDAN Fevola embarrassed himself, Carlton and the AFL at football's night of nights on Monday.

The club and the AFL returned serve on Tuesday.

The Blues fined him $10,000; AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou berated and belittled him.

Demetriou, though, should have gone a step further -- he should have announced that the Carlton full-forward is to be banned from all future Brownlow medal dinners while a player.

His performance at the after-party at Crown embarrassed his wife, Alex, teammates and their partners, anyone who crossed his path, the footy club and Channel 9, which, inexplicably, gave him the responsibility for Street Talk and left him unsupervised.

Many of us may have had one Crown Lager too many at the function, yet only one made a complete fool of himself.

He was a storm brewing for much of the night, with a performance during the count that prompted nearby officials to tell him to zip his lip.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the officials left after the official proceedings and Fev adjourned to the after-party.

In March last year Carlton chief executive Greg Swann was reported to have said: "We've also agreed with Brendan that if there are any more alcohol-related incidents then that will result in him being terminated by the Carlton Football Club."

Swann said last night Fevola's current contract -- 2009-11 -- does not include the alcohol clause.

Footy clubs, particularly coaches, aren't keen on the notion of tipping out players capable of kicking 100 goals in a season but surely he has exhausted the patience of Swann, president Stephen Kernahan and others.

There is a growing suspicion major sponsors and coterie members are over him, too.

Fevola admits he and alcohol are a volatile combination. If so, isn't there a logical conclusion?

The cry now is for a more responsible alcohol policy at events such as the Brownlow.

What's "more responsible"? A maximum three full-strength beers for men, two lights for women?

No, a memorable night out for more than 1000 people shouldn't be altered dramatically because one person behaves like a bozo.

I don't know how many chances the Blues are prepared to give him, but, on the evidence of the past 18 months, the answer seems to be "unlimited".
