Wayne Carey charged with assault

FALLEN AFL star Wayne Carey has been charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest at his Port Melbourne penthouse in January.

FALLEN AFL star Wayne Carey has been charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest at his Port Melbourne penthouse in January.

Victoria Police today confirmed a 36-year-old has been charged on summons to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 22.

Carey, 36, was charged on summons with six charges, including three counts of assaulting police and three counts of resisting arrest.

The former North Melbourne premiership star was arrested on January 27 for allegedly lashing out at police during a domestic dispute in Port Melbourne, but no charges were laid then.

Carey is also facing charges in the United States after an incident last October in Miami, Florida.

He was charged with aggravated battery of a police officer and resisting arrest with violence.

Miami police were called to the Mandarin Hotel last October after Ms Neilson allegedly complained Carey had smashed a glass in her face, cutting her mouth and neck.

When officers entered Carey's hotel room they alleged he "kicked one of the officers in the face with his foot" and "elbowed another one in the side of the face".

His trial has been set for a Miami court on July 21 and his lawyer Richard A Sharpstein said Carey would maintain his not guilty plea.

Mr Sharpstein said he had rejected the prosecution's offer of Carey spending one year and one day in jail.

The maximum penalty for the charges he faces is 15 years in an American jail.
