Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford was playing basketball with his son in the backyard when one of his best players declared on Twitter that she was retiring.

Tayla Harris had posted this message: "coronatime has got me thinking a lot … I've decided I will be RETIRING from AFLW and will dedicate my time to being a stay at home mum for my 2.5 y/o. Hope you all understand this tough decision xx"

In a rest break of the one-on-one tournament he was winning against his son, Harford checked his phone and saw the message.

His first thoughts were “this isn't going to happen” and then his brain clicked into what day it was.

Earlier that morning in his other job as radio breakfast show host on RSN, April Fool's Day had been a topic of conversation so his head was quickly around the gag his key forward was playing on the AFLW community.

“I was on to it quickly although in saying that Tayla is one of the players who is capable of doing something like that, just walking away at some point,” Harford said.

There were a lot of people who weren't as clued on as Harford about April Fool's Day, posting words of admiration for Harris about her career and wishing her the best in the future.

Although her mum Lisa was quick to reply: “Wake up to yourself Zany face.”

Harris came clean a few hours later, tweeting: “April fools lol AFLW players already parent and play.”
