IS one blinder and one reasonable game enough to make the AFLW02 All-Australian team?
Not a chance according to LAUREN WOOD and ELIZA SEWELL.
The Herald Sun reporters have overlooked Erin Phillips for their mid-season AFLW team of champions.
But who got in instead? Follow along as they debate all the big calls and see the full team below.
MEMO CLUBS: AFL TELLS CLUBS HOW TO PLAY
TOO LATE: GILLON SHOULD HAVE ACTED YEARS AGO
Lauren Wood: It’s been great to see the newbies bob up in AFLW02, but there’s one very familiar name missing from the Herald Sun half-way All-Oz team.
Eliza Sewell: This is All-Australian to Round 4, so there just can’t be room for arguably the game’s best, certainly most damaging, player. I expect Erin Phillips will sneak into the side by season’s end but can’t justify a nod on one blinder, one quiet match and two spent looking on from the sidelines. Gee the Bulldogs have been good, including youngsters Monique Conti and Bonnie Toogood.
LW: The two Doggies rising star nominees were in the mix, but you can’t get everyone in. One rookie just couldn’t be ignored — Chloe Molloy, Collingwood’s Rising Rising star favourite.
ES: At the start of the season you wouldn’t have guessed we’d be picking her as a defender, that’s for sure. Pies have been criticised in some quarters for keeping her down back, but she’s been a star. Captain Steph Chiocci has really improved her game. Didn’t make All-Australian last year and is probably stiff to start on our bench.
LW: It’s a super centre line, and maybe controversially room for just one Demon — Karen Paxman. Elise O’Dea is maybe unlucky to be relegated to the bench but Alicia Eva, Kara Donnellan, Emma Kearney and Ellie Blackburn have been dominating. Emma King is the standout ruck.
ES: The forward line looks different to last year. No Vescio, Phillips, Perkins. Phoebe McWilliams has been the standout for me and Daisy Pearce has been crucial in the Dees’ midfield, but damaging in attack too.
LW: Darcy hasn’t had much in the way of delivery, while Perko’s move to the midfield has sparked her a bit. I’ve been loving Jess Wuetschner’s work — including her celebrations.
Daisy was shut-out on the weekend but expect her to fire back. Talk me through the bench.
ES: Brooke Lochland was good even before last week’s magnificent seven. She pips Conti and Toogood. You dubbed Ebony Marinoff the tackling queen after her 21 in Round 4. She’s dealt with the hype of being the Rising Star.
LW: Maybe some Victorian polish! Last season spent with Darebin has served “Noffy” well.
