Carlton’s Lucy McEvoy on her ‘Big Boy’ nickname and ‘pooping’ her pants on debut

Carlton teammates have ordained the AFLW’s first Rising Star nominee of 2020 as ‘Big Boy’ in honour of her cousin, Hawthorn ruckman Ben McEvoy — but not everyone is happy with it.

Not everyone is a fan of Lucy McEvoy’s nickname at Carlton.

Her mum Martine takes exception to her daughter being called ‘Big Boy’.

The nickname is in reference to McEvoy’s cousin – Hawthorn big man Ben McEvoy – and while it had been floating around during her junior playing days, it has quickly stuck at the Blues.

“I’ve got that from a few of the girls now,” McEvoy said yesterday.

“I got that a lot in junior footy from a lot of the older girls and it’s just stuck. I’m not too fussed but I think mum’s a little bit annoyed with it. But I think it’s quite funny.”

The No. 2 draft pick last year, McEvoy shone brightly in her AFLW debut for the Blues last Friday night to earn a Round 1 NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nomination.

The 18-year-old collected 12 disposals, took five marks and laid four tackles – after fighting off some early nerves brought on by playing in front of a bumper crowd of 15,337 at Ikon Park.

“I must admit, at the start I was pooping my pants a little bit,” McEvoy said.

“At some point someone got tackled and the crowd went, ‘Baalllll’. For a second, I just went, ‘Oh my gosh’.

“But I was able to ignore the crowd a bit after we got started and the girls gave me the advice to just embrace it. I loved it. It was crazy.”

McEvoy predominantly played forward in her debut but has filled a variety of roles in recent years, a future move to the midfield a likely scenario.

“I haven’t really trained much with the forwards over summer, it was mostly midfield,” McEvoy said.

“But to play a bit more forward on Friday night was really good. I really enjoyed it apart from missing a shot on goal where I could have kicked the first goal but didn’t.

“But anywhere I get thrown I’m happy to play.”
