Geelong could be set to welcome back star forward Chloe Scheer for this weekend’s AFLW preliminary final with coach Dan Lowther declaring her a “genuine chance”.
After suffering a hairline fracture to her collarbone in the elimination final against Essendon, Scheer looked all but likely to miss the rest of the season.
But speaking at a pre-match press conference before the trip to take on Brisbane on Saturday night, Lowther revealed a decision would be made after a training session on Thursday.
When asked about Scheer’s fitness, Lowther was more than happy to provide an update on where her chances sat.
“She’s a genuine chance to play this week,” he said.
“She trained on Tuesday night, on the side of the main group, just went through her paces. She’ll train tonight.
“If she gets through the session, we have match play every session, if she gets through that we’ll have some discussions and some decisions to make around whether she comes in this week or we roll the dice and see how we go.
“It’s good for her to be around the group again, the group’s been really positive around that.”
Lowther revealed just had quickly Scheer’s recovery had been with the 24-year-old still in a sling earlier in the week.
“It’s just one of those injuries where you can’t do much apart from tolerating the pain,” he said.
“Once it’s had a chance to settle, she’s now exploring how she feels with it.
“Hopefully all goes well leading into the weekend.”
The Cats will enter the clash with Brisbane as underdogs after a stunning upset of Melbourne last week.
But don’t expect them to be buying into that mentality.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge and go up to Brisbane but not without confidence,” Lowther said.
“Look at last week against the Dees, three dominant quarters. It just shows we’re good enough to play against any opposition on any given day.”
