Double blow as Harris sanction revealed for ugly tackle

— Rebecca Williams

Melbourne star Tayla Harris has been hit with a one-game ban for rough conduct, ruling her out of Sunday’s clash against premiership favourite Brisbane.

In a blow to the unbeaten Demons’ prospects against the ladder-leading Lions at Casey Fields, the MRO hit Harris with the penalty for her dangerous tackle on St Kilda’s Molly McDonald on Sunday.

The MRO graded the incident as careless, medium impact and high contact.

It was a double blow for Melbourne with Harris’ Demons teammate Jordan Ivey also offered a one-match ban for rough conduct against the Saints.

Harris found herself under scrutiny after she slung McDonald to the ground in a two-motion tackle late in the Demons’ 26-point win over the Saints at Moorabbin.

McDonald’s head crashed into the turf in the tackle, but she was able to get up and take the free kick following the incident.

Harris had nine disposals and four marks in the Demons’ win over St Kilda.

Brutal tackle could land Harris in hot water

- James Mottershead

Tayla Harris will come under MRO scrutiny for a dangerous tackle late in the Demons’ 26-point win against St Kilda on Sunday.

The 25-year-old slung Molly McDonald to the ground in a two-motion tackle, with the Saints young gun’s head smashing into the RSEA Park turf.

With the game in junk time, the incident occurred following a St Kilda kick-in with the ball spilling off hands to the 21-year-old Saint.

Harris locked McDonald and the ball up, but continued with the tackle, thrusting the Saints player backwards.

McDonald, who was one of the Saints’ best, was able to get up and take the free kick after her head bounced off the ground.

But given the tougher interpretation around high contact incidents and the league’s determination to protect players from concussion, the AFL is in position to suggest the tackle had potential to cause injury and hand Harris a one-week ban, which would see her miss Melbourne’s crucial clash against premiership favourite Brisbane.
