AFL news: Port Adelaide AFLW star Abbey Dowrick caught drink driving

Port Adelaide AFLW young gun Abbey Dowrick has had her licence suspended and will face court after being caught drink driving. Here’s the latest.

Port Adelaide AFLW midfielder Abbey Dowrick will face court on a drink driving charge.

The Power revealed on Thursday afternoon that Dowrick, 20, had been reported by SA Police for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol while driving.

Dowrick, who finished second in the AFLW rising star award and third in the Power’s best and fairest, took a random breath test on the evening of June 23 and has subsequently had her licence suspended.

The Power said Dowrick was fully co-operating with authorities and was awaiting an upcoming court date.

“Abbey understands the seriousness of her actions and that she has let down her teammates, the club and its community,“ Power AFLW boss Juliet Haslam said.

“Abbey is remorseful of the decision she made, particularly as an elite athlete and role model. She made a misjudgment and has learned a valuable lesson.

“The club will support Abbey through this time, and will continue working with her on the importance of making positive choices.”

In addition to the court-imposed charges, Port Adelaide has confirmed Dowrick will be required to complete two separate road safety awareness programs, as well as one-on-one alcohol management education.
