TRADE WRAP: RECAP EVERY MOVE OF A FRANTIC FINAL DAY

AT LAST: O’MEARA A HAWK AFTER LAST-MINUTE DEAL

NO DEAL: CROWS MISS OUT ON GIBBS

ADELAIDE

GAINED: Nil.

LOST: Jarryd Lyons

DRAFT PICKS: 13, 43, 53, 67, 89, 107, 125, 143

Bitter by the end of a trade period in which it’s hard to describe them as anything but a loser.

Perhaps one class midfielder away from being a major flag contender, the Crows instead lost emerging onballer Jarryd Lyons and failed to capture contracted Blue Bryce Gibbs.

Lyons played 20 games and both finals this year, but left for a shuffle of late picks. Carlton asked for the world (two first round picks) for Gibbs, which the Crows described as an “unrealistic demand”.

BRISBANE LIONS

GAINED: Jack Frost

LOST: Pearce Hanley

DRAFT PICKS: 3, 16, 21, 22, 76, 78, 96, 114, 132

A quiet October usually spells a win for the Lions, given the airport-style speedwalk which usually rolls out of the Gabba. Dangled captain Tom Rockliff but nobody nibbled and rolled in more draft gold for his best mate Pearce Hanley. Next mission — re-sign goalkicker Josh Schache.

CARLTON

GAINED: Billie Smedts, Caleb Marchbank, Jarrod Pickett, Rhys Palmer

LOST: Zach Tuohy

DRAFT PICKS: 5, 25, 48, 63, 66, 70, 81, 99, 117,

Refused to buckle on Gibbs, while getting a future first-round pick back from Geelong for Zach Tuohy. But conspiracy theorists wondered about a puzzling pick swap with Hawthorn — giving up a future second-round pick for selections 48, 66 and 70 — that rescued the Hawks’ bid for Jaeger O’Meara. Continued to raid GWS, this time taking Caleb Marchbank, Jarrod Pickett and Rhys Palmer, while keeping pick 5 in next month’s national draft.

COLLINGWOOD

GAINED: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Daniel Wells, Chris Mayne, Lynden Dunn

LOST: Travis Cloke, Jarrod Witts, Marley Williams, Jack Frost, Nathan Brown

DRAFT PICKS: 28, 44, 51, 62, 65, 83, 101, 105

Busy without delivering the wow factor. Nabbed 31-year-old free agent Daniel Wells and an underperforming Will Hoskin-Elliott — who they see upside in — for a future second-round pick. But here’s where things get a bit messy. Lynden Dunn arrives after failing to get a game at the Demons and Chris Mayne lands on a four-year contract worth $2 million. Defenders Jack Frost, Marley Williams and Nathan Brown all left, along with Travis Cloke for pick 76.

ESSENDON

GAINED: James Stewart

LOST: Michael Hibberd

DRAFT PICKS: 1, 20, 29, 41, 68, 95, 113, 131

Held firm on gaining pick 29 for Hibberd and landed a bargain co-pilot for Jo Daniher in James Stewart. The former Giant is so athletic the Bombers believe he could become a burst midfielder. The shop was open for the No. 1 pick — but there were no buyers. Only losing Hibberd as the drugs disaster finally ended a major positive.

FREMANTLE

GAINED: Brad Hill, Cam McCarthy, Joel Hamling, Shane Kersten

LOST: Chris Mayne

DRAFT PICKS: 7, 35, 40, 71, 79, 97, 115, 133

One of the biggest winners from the trade period, surely. Landed Cam McCarthy and Shane Kersten to add two much-needed marking targets and Joel Hamling to bolster the defence and Brad Hill for some turbo-charged midfield run. And they still have pick 7. If Harley Bennell gets his act together this could be a quick bounce up the ladder.

GEELONG

GAINED: Zach Tuohy, Aaron Black

LOST: Josh Caddy, Billie Smedts, Shane Kersten, Nathan Vardy

DRAFT PICKS: 24, 38, 42, 64, 72, 74, 91, 110, 128, 146

Hard to trade when picks and money is at a premium. Managed to bring Zach Tuohy over from Carlton, but in the process lost Josh Caddy and Nathan Vardy while Jimmy Bartel has joined Corey Enright in retirement. Aaron Black must make the most of his second chance at AFL level.

EVERY MOVE: ALL YOUR CLUB’S LIST CHANGES

FINALLY: CLOKE GETS HIS BULLDOG WISH

GOLD COAST

GAINED: Pearce Hanley, Jarrod Witts, Jarryd Lyons

LOST: Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara

DRAFT PICKS: 4, 6, 8, 10, 73, 98, 116, 134

Dropped like a cold pie by Dion Prestia and Jaeger O’Meara, but salvaged what they could from the wreckage — essentially pick 6 and 10 with a future second-rounder, respectively. Jarrod Witts will help in the ruck and Pearce Hanley should make a difference. Getting Jarrod Lyons and pick 71 from Adelaide for picks 43 and 67 was an absolute steal. Have a glut of draft picks, but have lost class in the short-term.

GWS GIANTS

GAINED: Brett Deledio

LOST: Jack Steele, Caleb Marchbank, Jarrod Pickett, Rhys Palmer, James Stewart, Cam McCarthy, Pat McKenna, Paul Ahern

DRAFT PICKS: 2, 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 77, 109, 127, 135, 145

Let’s be honest, the Giants don’t even need Brett Deledio, their side is already so well stacked with gun young ball winners. But the arrival of the Richmond star injects another prized utility that will make this team very hard to beat next season. They lost a few of their emerging players and although some of them are high draft picks, in reality, they were surplus to requirements anyway.

HAWTHORN

GAINED: Ty Vickery, Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara

LOST: Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis, Brad Hill

DRAFT PICKS: 88, 90, 108, 126

Went into the trade window with a plan and executed it to perfection. Time will tell if it pays off. A few nervous hours if not days haggling with Gold Coast over Jaeger O’Meara but the Hawks got their man in end. A whopping 666 games experience and 11 premiership medallions (Mitchell, Lewis and Hill) out the window, but lots of upside in Tom Mitchell and Ty Vickery.

MELBOURNE

GAINED: Michael Hibberd, Jordan Lewis, Pat McKenna

LOST: Lynden Dunn

DRAFT PICKS: 47, 69, 84, 102, 120

Simon Goodwin’s Christmas present has come early. Jordan Lewis adds vital experience and leadership and Michael Hibberd is the tough and hard-running defender that will help drive their more attacking game plan from half back. And their first pick from this year’s draft was activated last year to help get the key forward they required to co-pilot and keep Jesse Hogan. Well played, Dees.

NORTH MELBOURNE

GAINED: Paul Ahern, Nathan Hrovat, Marley Williams

LOST: Daniel Wells, Aaron Black

DRAFT PICKS: 11, 32, 33, 87, 92, 123, 141

Slow to start but got going on the final day to inject much-needed youth and speed. Nathan Hrovat looks a genuine starter next year, while Marley Williams for pick 105 is worth the risk. Won’t know for sure until 2018 but Paul Ahern might well be the biggest steal of them all.

PORT ADELAIDE

GAINED: Nil.

LOST: Nil.

DRAFT PICKS: 14, 17, 30, 31, 85, 103, 121, 139

All roads lead to the draft after securing pick 19 — from Brisbane in Pearce Hanley trade — to make three selections inside the top 30 to play with. Not much else to see here.

RICHMOND

GAINED: Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis

LOST: Brett Deledio, Ty Vickery

DRAFT PICKS: 27, 56, 82, 100, 118, 136

Finished with a roar, jagging Prestia, Caddy and Nankervis at the death. The first two give grunt and power to the existing polish and Nankervis is a young ruckman with a big future. Dimma’s job security goes up after Richmond’s best off-season in years.

ST KILDA

GAINED: Jack Steele, Nathan Brown, Koby Stevens

LOST: Nil.

DRAFT PICKS: 23, 36, 61, 86, 104, 122, 140

Will be in a strong position to work some magic in the trade period in 12 months’ time after stuffing a future pick from Hawthorn in its long-term deposit box. Whether it’s Nat Fyfe or another big gun, the Saints will have the space to go hard for some top-end talent next year. Picked up hard nuts Koby Stevens and Jack Steele for not much and plugged Nathan Brown into its vacant full-back spot for peanuts.

SYDNEY

GAINED: Nil.

LOST: Tom Mitchell, Toby Nankervis

DRAFT PICKS: 9, 19, 46, 49, 93, 111, 129, 147

Tight salary cap forced out Tom Mitchell in return for pick 14 but the Swans weren’t in much a of a position to do much anyway in this trade period. Their focus is on retaining stars Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills, who are two of the best young under-21 players in the competition. Toby Nankervis sought more opportunity at Richmond and Kurt Tippett was never going anywhere.

West Coast announce their recruit Sam Mitchell.
West Coast announce their recruit Sam Mitchell.

WEST COAST

GAINED: Sam Mitchell, Nathan Vardy

LOST: Nil.

DRAFT PICKS: 12, 34, 54, 106, 124, 142

The laughter can still be heard down the corridors at Subiaco Oval after Adam Simpson helped stitch up Sam Mitchell for pick 88. The AFL’s integrity department will be checking Mitchell’s mattress at his new Perth pad to make sure there aren’t undisclosed wads of cash stuffed in there somewhere because this seems like the deal of a lifetime. Big cat Nathan Vardy struggled to get a kick in the VFL this year but fills the ruck-key forward role.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

GAINED: Travis Cloke

LOST: Nathan Hrovat, Joel Hamling, Koby Stevens

DRAFT PICKS: 18, 26, 50, 75, 80, 112, 130, 148

Fans wondered if they’d sobered up from Grand Final day when the Hrovat deal lobbed. Went all-out at Michael Hurley midyear and missed and then came late for Deledio, but were too late. Enter Travis Cloke. Now, to cure Marcus Adams’ homesickness.
