Joe Daniher trade drama forces Carlton and Gold Coast to consider Jack Martin options

As clubs come to the realisation that Essendon might hold firm on Joe Daniher, Carlton and Gold Coast are clamouring to hatch a fall-back plan for Jack Martin. ROLLING TRADE NEWS

Day five trade moves

Carlton and Gold Coast are clamouring to hatch a fall-back plan for Jack Martin that could include the Blues first-round pick next season.

As clubs come to the realisation that Essendon might hold firm on Joe Daniher, the lack of movement would also see Sydney refusing to trade Tom Papley.

Carlton had hoped to split pick nine in a way that would give them multiple picks, the latter selection being handed to Gold Coast for the departing Martin.

One trade scenario that would secure Martin would involve the Blues handing over their first-round selection next year and Gold Coast handing over a second-round pick in return.

Carlton could back itself to rise up the ladder so would secure Martin for what is effectively a shuffle of about 10 picks back down the order.

Gold Coast will receive an extra mid first-round pick in the 2020 national draft as part of the AFL’s assistance package.

So if Carlton battled next year Gold Coast would have one of the first handful of national draft picks, that mid-first round pick and then Carlton’s first pick.

Adelaide and Gold Coast have made little progress so far on a deal for Hugh Greenwood, with the Crows asking for the Suns’ pick 20 for the inside midfielder.

The Suns won’t hand over a pick of that quality given the Crows didn’t want to offer more than two years for Greenwood.

Similarly, Brisbane is baulking at handing over pick 21 for Gold Coast’s Callum Ah Chee after he nominated the Lions for a trade.

Club frustration builds over second trade period

Frustrated clubs are still in the dark over next year’s trade landscape with the AFL yet to declare whether it will bring in a pre-season exchanged period.

List managers believed they would be informed when the league met all 18 clubs on Monday morning prior to trade period opening.

While the question was asked by a club official, AFL investigations manager Ken Wood and his offsider did not provide a clear answer.

Some believed the AFL staffers were slightly misaligned on the topic. Wood eventually told the room that a final verdict would be delayed.

Players tell Bombers: Hold Joe to his contract

Essendon’s players are lobbying the club to hold Joe Daniher to his contract.

Daniher last week confirmed months of speculation by requesting a trade to Sydney, despite having a year to run on his Bomber deal.

The key forward has left for an overseas holiday having triggered a fortnight of tense negotiations between the Dons and the Swans.

But Daniher’s Essendon teammates aren’t taking the news lying down, with several urging club chiefs to do everything in their power to keep Daniher.

Veteran Hawthorn list builder Gary Buckenara has urged the Bombers to take Sydney’s best offer for Joe Daniher and move on from a player who doesn’t want to be at the club.

Buckenara has been one of footy’s most accomplished recruiters and list managers, and said the Dons had to realise how valuable two top-10 picks were in an exchange for Daniher.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro said there were no quality talls in the early part of the draft to replace Daniher.

So he is keen to hold onto a player who has requested a trade to Essendon.

In last year's draft there were players including Ben King available at pick six, with Sydney then taking Nick Blakey with the No.10 selection in the draft.

But Buckenara told the Herald Sun regardless of Daniher's talent few deals in history offered such quality picks for a player with so few recent games.

“It’s a midfielders draft. There aren’t too many key position players around. They are saying we are losing a 203cm key position player yet we are not going to replace him with a potential young guy but at the end of the day two top-10 picks for a guy who has played 11 games in two years, it is a very, very fair deal,” he said.

"To me two first round draft picks, you are going to get two very good players, they probably need a really good inside grunt mid and another good outside speed and they are going to find them. They are definitely going to get it. Two top ten picks for a guy who has played 11 games in two years, if I was (Stephen) Wells getting two first-rounders in 10 , he would do that deal.

“You are going to get two picks inside 10, to me it’s ridiculous they are taking the stance they are.”

If Essendon took picks 5 and 9 from Sydney (who would need to trade Tom Papley for nine) those picks might push down to 6 and 10 by draft day.

GWS is likely to secure academy star Tom Green within the first five picks under the AFL bidding system, which will push club's picks back one selection.

Done Deal: Lions, Eagles in pick swap

Liam Twomey

Brisbane Lions have traded selections 46 and 91 to West Coast Eagles for selections 52 and 64.

Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright was just on Trade Radio. Here is a snapshot of what he had to say on Frost, Hill, rucks, Smith and Patton.
Sam Frost

It was great to get the deal done today. Obviously it is always a time of unknown when the deal is going to get done or how much you’re going to need to get it done. We are really happy with the negotiations with Melbourne and being able to get a deal done to get Sam through the door. We think he will add to our group. He is a high quality defender, a good size, has good speed, agility, able to play on smalls and talls. We think he will fit in really well.

Chasing Bradley Hill
I think that is drawing a long bow. I wouldn’t have thought so. Bradley has made his intentions pretty clear that he wanted to get to St Kilda and I think the offer that St Kilda has put forward, by all reports, is one that we wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near.
Marc Pittonet/ Hawthorn rucks
We've reiterated to him that we're keen for him to stay. His consistency has really improved the last couple of years. He is right in that window for young ruckmen. We have played Ben McEvoy back at the end of the year. From what I understand from our coach he is pretty keen to keep going with that. That obviously would leave Jonathon Ceglar in the No.1 ruck role right at the moment. In all these situations, whether you’re number one or number two, it depends on how you perform.
Isaac Smith
He's a contracted player and as far as I'm aware he doesn't want to look at, or do anything else. He'll be with us in 2020.
Jon Patton
We’ve had ongoing discussions with Jason McCartney. It would be fair to say, he’s a contracted player with them as well. It is a situation where if they don’t want to lose him, they don’t have to lose him. At this stage, I’m not sure what it is going to take.

IS DOUGAL HOWARD COMING OR GOING?

Liam Twomey

Port Adelaide's list manager Jason Cripps wasn't giving much away on the future of swingman Dougal Howard, who has requested a trade to St Kilda.
"Dougal is contracted and he's a required player," he said.
"We had an honest conversation at the end of the season … he's an important player. When guys are 199-200cm guys are pretty hard to find that can play at either end.
"But at the same time you've got to look at ways to improve your list, so that's where we're at with Dougal."
