Daniel Menzel remains in contract limbo despite Sydney announcing a host of new deals
Sydney announced new deals for a host of players to kick off the trade period. However, Daniel Menzel wasn’t one of them. Jon Ralph breaks down exactly where the forward is at.
Daniel Menzel remains in contract limbo until the end of the trade period despite the Swans announcing five player signings.
Menzel signed a one-year contract with Sydney for 2019 but played only seven games because of summer groin surgery, including the final four games of the season.
He kicked seven goals for the season as well as kicking 17 goals in six NEAFL games.
Menzel was hoping to secure another extension but at this stage he has been given no guarantees.

His position on the list is not believed to be tied to Sydney’s capacity to lure Joe Daniher, given he plays in a different style to the pure marking forward.
Medium-sized forward Tom Papley is likely to eventually move to Carlton but is more of a running forward than mark-and-goal player like Menzel.
If Daniher arrives and can complete a full pre-season it will give Sydney coach John Longmire a dizzying array of tall forward targets.
He could play Franklin, Daniher, Tom McCartin and marking midfielder Isaac Heeney in attack, with 187cm marking forward Will Hayward also a regular in the front six.
Sydney on Tuesday announced deals for Robbie Fox, Hayden McLean, James Bell, Joel Amartey and Michael Knoll on one-year deals.
Menzel has so far played 80 games after his remarkable recovery from four knee reconstructions.

Port Adelaide swingman Dougal Howard is happy to be involved in any trade for Orazio Fantasia.
Fantasia signed with Adelaide-based manager Michael Doughty on Monday as speculation rages he is about to request a trade to the Power.
The 24-year-old forward will sit down with Doughty to assess his options on Wednesday before it is expected he will formally ask for a move.
It comes as Essendon emerged as a potential landing spot for Brisbane wingman Tom Cutler.
Brisbane would like to keep the long-kicking midfielder but given family health issues in Melbourne have agreed they will trade him.
Essendon has plenty of deals yet to broker but Cutler would help aid their midfield core given his skill set, hampered this year by a foot injury.
Fantasia underwent minor knee surgery on Tuesday after earlier hip surgery.
Fantasia still has two years to run on his Bombers contract, but was linked with a move home to South Australia mid-season and has since told those close to him that he will look to move in this exchange window.
Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies put his club's interest in Fantasia on the record on the opening day of the trade period.
“There has been a lot about our interest in Orazio Fantasia, but the reality is that’s our position across the board if a young South Australian player wants to come home, we have some interest,” Davis said.
“We will have a chat with Essendon … and we’ll get an indication of what their position is which I imagine is that he is a contracted player.
“So I think it’s way too early, suggesting one way or another we’ll wait and see how the days play out.”
Doughty is one of 16 TLA agents across Australia, with at least half of them in Melbourne. Yet the fact Fantasia has chosen him for representation offers a subtle hint over his future.
Howard, 23, has played only 45 games for the Power but given his athletic gifts and leadership skills he is in hot demand.
He is open to a move to a Melbourne club, and if Essendon identified a clear need for him he is open-minded about that kind of switch.
Howard was told by Port Adelaide in his exit interview that they saw him playing as a key forward in 2020, but the Power also gave him permission to assess rival options.
Essendon, North Melbourne and St Kilda are the three Victorian suitors, with Collingwood showing early interest, but not considered a realistic option any more.
The Roos would lock him away as a key defender, while St Kilda sees him as a swingman.
Essendon could throw him forward, particularly if Joe Daniher departs for Sydney, or even play him down back to release Cale Hooker into the front half.

Swans announce five new deals
Sydney has re-signed kicked off its off-season by announcing a host of new deals.
Robbie Fox, Hayden McLean, James Bell, Joel Amartey and Michael Knoll have all committed to new deals with the Swans.
Head of football Charlie Gardiner said it was exciting to have the five Swans locked in.
“We’re delighted that Robbie, Hayden, James, Joel and Michael will continue their careers with the Swans for at least another year,” Gardiner said.
“Robbie has demonstrated an ability to play a number of roles at senior level and we expect James, Michael, Joel and Hayden to continue to develop and push for more senior opportunities next year.
“They’re all young, exciting, eager to learn and have bright futures ahead of them which is a great result for our football club.”

Essendon does not have a genuine A-grade star and its premiership hopes for the near future are fading fast.
I know Bombers fans will hate me for saying that, but is there really a player at Essendon as good as Dustin Martin, Patrick Dangerfield or Marcus Bontempelli? The answer is no.
What the club does have is an abundance of highly talented players, including 14 players I rate in the B category — headed by the likes of Jake Stringer, Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel — and seven C+ players.
It’s a good spread of talent, don’t get me wrong, and a spread most clubs would love but there is a serious need for a genuine superstar.

Why Elliott knocked back more cash for Pies
JON RALPH
Jamie Elliott’s sense of unfinished business at Collingwood saw him rebuff more lucrative offers as he attempts to win an elusive premiership with the Pies.
The Magpies small forward spoke with Melbourne and Brisbane about moving on from Collingwood, but in the end decided he could not leave.
Elliott was able to kick 26 goals in 16 matches this year, including 11 in his final four games of the season.
Having stayed despite his free agency status, he is holidaying with his brother in Airlie Beach ahead of a European holiday.
