Gold Coast can use the threat of the pre-season draft to squeeze Adelaide on a trade for Hugh Greenwood as the clubs haggle over an appropriate trade value.

Adelaide will hope to secure a second-round pick for the former basketballer, but he is uncontracted and has the option of delisting himself.

A deal will eventually be brokered between the two clubs, but the Suns believe his value lies closer to a third-round pick than an early second-rounder.

Gold Coast has the first pick in the pre-season draft given they won the wooden spoon so could effectively secure Greenwood for nothing.

Adelaide was only prepared to offer a two-year deal for Greenwood, who has secured a lucrative three-year deal with a games-based trigger for a fourth season.

Adelaide’s chief concern in the trade period is getting into early picks in the draft.

But already the Western Bulldogs are playing hard ball on Alex Keath, saying a stress fracture in his leg that will require months of rest drives his price down.

The Crows will receive little or nothing back for veterans Josh Jenkins, Eddie Betts and Sam Jacobs.

Jenkins is yet to find a new home despite averaging two goals a game in each of his past six seasons.

But his management believes a suitor will eventually emerge given his talent, with enough clubs keen to find goal power for spluttering forward lines.

The Suns currently have picks one, two, 15, 20, 57, 77 and 89 but have deals ahead with Jack Martin and Callum Ah Chee.

BUCKY'S WARNING FOR SWANS

Michael Randall

-GARY BUCKENARA

The Swans have pulled off another coup with Essendon’s Joe Daniher requesting a trade to the club and, if they can get a deal done, he will team up with Franklin in one of the most dangerous tall forward setups we’ve seen. That’s providing Daniher can get his groin injuries under control.

Before his groin problems Daniher, would have been worth two top-10 picks in a trade, but the Swans currently hold pick No.5 and I think that’s a fair deal for a guy who has played 11 games in two years and who they could get for nothing as a free agent next year.

Sydney might throw in pick 25 as a sweetener but I definitely wouldn’t be giving up picks 5 and 9 (if they get that for Tom Papley from Carlton) for Daniher.

EAGLES FIRM FOR PREMIERSHIP AFTER KELLY DEAL

It hasn't taken long.

Tim Kelly's official announcement as an Eagle has shaved half a point off outright second-favourite West Coast's premiership odds with TAB.com.au

Before today’s confirmation of the trade, West Coast were $7, but they have shortened to $6.50 now that the exchange between the Eagles and Geelong has finally taken place.

TAB reports 62 percent of the money wagered on next year's flag winner has been on the Eagles, who are the fifth most popular team with punters overall.

Reigning premier Richmond is still the $4.50 favourite.

CATS' GORY SURGERY

Michael Randall

-MICHAEL RANDALL

Geelong young gun Jordan Clark has revealed the extent of the surgery it took to repair his injured left elbow.

Clark, who injured the elbow in an August training mishap and missed the finals, said the surgical repair was complex.

“I had to have my triceps tendon repaired, and a few little tendons and muscles around the inside of my elbow touched up as well,” Clark told krockfootball.com.au.
“I’ve got quite a significant rehab in front of me; a couple of months on the sidelines before I can get back into any contact."

Clark says he will have to focus on other ways to improve his game during the first half of preseason, given the four-month recovery on his injury.

“I won’t be able to do contact, so that means a fair bit of running for me and quite a few touch sessions and skill sessions to tidy up a few things and improve myself as a footballer,” he said.
“Hopefully, dead on four months would be good for contact. That’s sort of the timeframe I’ve been given.
“But I’m looking to get this rehab done properly. If it takes five months, it takes five months.”
Clark was pick No.15 in last year's draft and managed 18 games last season.

Jon Ralph reports…

Shane Mumford is a confirmed starter for Greater Western Sydney next year, adamant his body can hold up for one more season.

The former Geelong and Sydney ruckman played 20 games for the Giants this year including all four finals.

GWS list manager Jason McCartney said today the club had given Mumford and Shaw time away after their exit interviews to ensure they were still keen to go on.

Mumford's manager Anthony McConville told the Herald Sun today Mumford was certain to play on as a rookie.

He said Mumford, 33, was still sound of body and mind and looking forward to forming a ruck duo with Adelaide's Sam Jacobs.

Jacobs will join the club next year and allow Mumford to be rested at times after a gruelling workload.

Mumford was lion-hearted in the final minutes of the preliminary final win over Collingwood.

But the GWS midfield was well beaten in the Grand Final as Mumford amassed 15 hitouts and 10 possessions.

He had a trigger clause in his contract that required him to play 18 games to secure a contract, hitting that trigger in the semi-final against Brisbane.

Essendon was part of the Tim Kelly deal in a swap of draft picks.

The Bombers gave up picks 37 and 52 and received picks 33 and 57 in the deal.

In effect they were happy to move four spots backwards in the second round in exchange for moving five spots up the order in the fifth round.

Makes perfect sense …
