Carlton’s hopes of going back-to-back have received a big boost with emerging star forward Charlie Curnow picked to face Hawthorn on Sunday.

Curnow was racing the clock to be fit after being a late withdrawal from last week’s team that beat the Western Bulldogs.

Hawthorn also welcomes back some big names, with captain Ben Stratton and experienced midfielder Liam Shiels to return for the clash in Launceston.

In the other Sunday game, Geelong has welcomed back halfback Zach Tuohy for its home clash with reigning premier West Coast and chosen to manage first-round draftee Jordan Clark.

Brandon Parfitt will miss with injury, but SuperCoach favourite Charlie Constable is back as the Cats’ other inclusion.

The Eagles included Jarrod Brander and Daniel Venables to the side that went down against Port Adelaide in Round 5.

But it’s not all good news for the reigning premier, with midfielder Jack Redden out with a foot injury.

DAVIS PASSED FIT TO RESUME FRANKLIN BATTLE

Jon Ritson

Giants co-captain Phil Davis has handed his side a major boost after seemingly winning his fitness battle and teeing up another round of hostilities with the Swans’ Lance Franklin.

An ankle injury had threatened to scupper Davis’s derby hopes but the key defender has put his hand up to play.

Davis kept Franklin goalless in last season’s elimination final but tempers frayed in the final quarter.

Last season’s round 22 clash saw Franklin nudge Davis into teammate Rory Lobb, the resulting collision leaving the Giants co-captain struggling to walk.

Davis felt Franklin tried to do it again during the elimination clash and it triggered some push and shove.

Coach Leon Cameron, also boosted by the return of Toby Greene to his side, is delighted to have Davis available.

“It didn’t look good because he obviously rolled over on it a fair way but he probably started putting his hand up early in the week. Sunday he was a bit sore but Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday he made some clear ground on the rolled ankle,” he said. “He’s confident in himself and we back him, he’s our co-captain, he wouldn’t put up his hand if he wasn’t able to play his role.”

On Greene, Cameron added: “He’s eager, he’s keen and we expect him to have an impact.”

Aidan Corr comes into the picture (interchange) for the first time since round 17 last year with Cameron hailing the defender’s ability “to play on talls, mediums and smalls.”

“I think it will be a classic derby, it will just be a brutal, hard-hitting derby, two teams will just go hell for leather until that final siren,” Cameron said.

Matt Buntine and Jackson Hately are the men to make way.

As for the Swans, they have made two changes with youngster Nick Blakey back to boost the attack while Lewis Melican is restored to the backline.

Kieren Jack misses out through a hip injury while Ben Ronke drops out of the side.

“He (Blakey) went back and played well in our reserves last week, just a bit of confidence running around at the next level down,” Longmire said. “(He) had a number of shots at goal and really ran around well, so he’s back in the team.

“Obviously the Giants have got a taller forward line so it’s good to see him (Melican) back in the team.”

Losing Jack is a blow but the Swans coach is confident it’s only a short term setback.

“Unfortunately he had a collision last week and his hip that’s been troubling him at various times over the last couple of years flared up again so hopefully it’s only a short term one and we’ll see how he is next week,” Longmire said.
