But who is lighting it up this pre-season?
With players across the competition beginning to run gruelling time trials, we take a look at which of your club’s chargers are already starting to push for a Round 1 spot next year.
ADELAIDE
With the full squad returning to training on Monday, youngster Jake Kelly took out Adelaide’s 2km time trial. Pipped at the post by Riley Knight earlier in the off-season, Kelly saw off competition from Rory Atkins and David Mackay next time up. Knight wasn’t required to run in the second time trial, having won an earlier event in November.

BRISBANE
Hard-nosed midfielder Nick Robertson claimed his second successive 3km time trial at Brisbane, breaking his personal best time in the process. Competing with his young teammates, Robertson edged out the likes of Lewis Taylor, with Josh Schache also breaking a personal best time.
COLLINGWOOD
Young midfielder Tom Phillips claimed his second successive time trial victory at Collingwood, seeing off experienced teammate Steele Sidebottom and fellow youngster Josh Smith. Making his debut last season, Phillips never looked trouble in the 2km race.

ESSENDON
The versatile Patrick Ambrose showed off his running capabilities, winning Essendon’s 2km time trial ahead of two experienced teammates. Ambrose beat the returning Brent Stanton and fellow midfielder David Zaharakis around the track.

FREMANTLE
New Fremantle recruit Bradley Hill has claimed the club’s 3km time trial in one of his first training stints with the Dockers. Known for his elite running as a junior, Hill saw off competition from new teammates Tom Sheridan and Cam Sutcliffe to take out the race.

GOLD COAST
Despite holding the combine record for the 3km time trial, youngster Josh Schoenfeld was edged out in Gold Coast’s 2km run by teammate Kade Kolodjashnij. The two battled from start to finish, with Suns midfielder Touk Miller describing Kolodjashnij’s performance as “pretty impressive”.
GWS GIANTS
Gun midfielder Tom Scully again showcased his elite running capabilities, winning Greater Western Sydney’s 3km time trial. Adam Tomlinson followed on from his strong finish to the season by coming second, while Fremantle recruit Tendai Mzungu made a solid start to his Giants career by rounding out the top three.

MELBOURNE
Tom Bugg held off Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones to claim the club’s 3km time trial. Young midfielder Alex Neal-Bullen completed the top three at the Demons in what was the best time trial result of his career so far.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Kangaroos forward Mason Wood unseated teammate Sam Gibson as the club’s new time trial champion, taking out the 2km race on Monday. Wood beat rookie Will Fordham across the track, with Gibson finishing in third place.

RICHMOND
Injury-plagued Tigers midfielder Nathan Drummond continued his successful return by taking out the club’s 3km time trial. Battling it out against the club’s one-to-four-year players, Drummond saw off Kane Lambert and Kamdyn McIntosh to claim the race.

ST KILDA
Promising young midfielder Jack Sinclair claimed St Kilda’s time trial in a battle of the club’s one-to-four-year players. In a 3km run held last month, Sinclair held off Daniel McKenzie and Jack Lonie inside the top three.

SYDNEY
Star midfielder Daniel Hannebery returned from a knee injury sustained in the grand final to claim Sydney’s 3km time trial on Monday. In his first day back at training, Hannebery saw off youngsters Jordan Foote and Harry Cunningham to claim the race.

WEST COAST
Gun midfielder Chris Masten took out his second successive West Coast time trial earlier last month. Masten defeated youngster Tom Lamb in the 2km run, with small forward Jamie Cripps rounding out the top three.
