'CARNAGE!' Carlton's injury blows

Mitch McGovern has been cleared of any structural damage to his chest after he was taken to hospital on Friday night.

The key defender suffered an injury to his sternum in a collision in the win over St Kilda, and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

But the club has confirmed McGovern will be monitored throughout the week ahead of the important trip to Sydney, and could be available for the game.

Charlie Curnow came into the clash under an injury cloud, but he starred alongside Harry McKay.

McKay said his partner-in-crime was never in doubt, and had pulled up well from the contest.

“Charlie had a bit of a tangle up in the last two minutes of training on Wednesday night,” he said on SEN.

“I don’t think he was ever in doubt, he was fine, but he’s crucial to our side.

“He’s a tough bugger though, he definitely pushes through a lot of stuff but he was always going to play.”

McGovern was not the only injury for the Blues, with Blake Acres suffering a shoulder injury.

Acres popped his shoulder back in during the win, but could avoid surgery and play through the unstable joint.

“It was a pretty chaotic moment, to be honest,” Acres told Fox Footy after the match.

“I was down in the race and seeing Cowan in there, and McGovern was getting in the back of an ambulance. It was just crazy at the time.

“I’ll see how it pulls up, to be honest, and go from there.”

Lachie Cowan made his return to the senior side in recent weeks, but is set for another stint on the sidelines after suffering hamstring tightness.

It’s not expected to keep him out for the long-term, but will likely miss at least one week after being sidelined for three weeks with his previous hamstring strain.
