The post-script of Hawthorn’s painful semi-final loss to Port Adelaide has taken another turn with James Sicily set to undergo surgery on the shoulder injury he carried for much of the year.

Hawthorn captain James Sicily will soon have surgery on the shoulder injury he has carried for the second half of the season.

Sicily dislocated his shoulder on two occasions this year, the last in June against West Coast in Perth.

He missed one game after that and featured in every game for the Hawks from round 18 onwards.

Sicily said initially he was in duress but was happy he was able to play through the pain.

“I’m all right now, the only time I was under any duress was those first three weeks after I hurt it,” he said.

“That is when you are in a fair bit of discomfort and at times I looked like I played that way and I was very protective of it in games.

“But I am really happy I was able to get through and be a part of the two finals games and getting into finals.

“I’ll have surgery at some point and hopefully have a better shoulder next year.”

Sicily looked to have written his name into Hawthorn folklore when he went forward and kicked a goal and looked like he had slotted one to give the Hawks the lead late on in the semi-final against Port Adelaide on Friday night.

But his shot hit the post and the Power held on to win by three points.

BLUES CONFIRM CURNOW ANKLE SURGERY PLAN

Carlton has confirmed superstar Charlie Curnow will undergo surgery on his ankle which will delay his start to the preseason.

The Herald Sun revealed on Sunday the brilliant forward was set to go under the knife to fix the injury which hampered him in the back end of the season.

There is damage on both sides of his left ankle which needs a procedure to help fast-track his recovery.

Carlton confirmed on Friday it was expected to sideline him until December when Curnow will begin a modified training program.

The Blues said Curnow “will undergo surgery to correct an ankle injury and will work through his rehabilitation over the off-season”.

The club said he would “begin to integrate back into the training program when pre-season resumes in December”.

He is expected to be back in full training in the new year as the Blues attempt to go further than this year’s comprehensive elimination final loss to Brisbane Lions.

Small forward Corey Durdin will also undergo shoulder surgery and work back into training in January, the club confirmed.
