AFL Draft 2020: Updated picks order, key questions answered

The next generation of AFL stars will take centre stage on Wednesday in a national draft like no other.

The draft has been hit by COVID-19 and will be conducted remotely, while the pandemic has also made recruiters' jobs tougher than ever.

Meanwhile, the order is influenced by a large number of junior stars who are already tied to AFL clubs through father-son rules or next generation academies.

And to make things even more interesting, clubs have continued to swap draft picks after the trade period finished. Clubs can also trade live picks during the draft.

Geelong improved its position by trading a future third-round pick to Gold Coast for pick 27, while the Western Bulldogs swapped pick 26 for the Giants' picks 29 and 52.

The national draft is normally held in late November, but has been pushed back to December 9 this year. It will be a one-night event, with the rookie draft held the next day. Due to reduced list sizes some clubs may select only one player on draft night, but others will take as many as five.

It is widely expected that Adelaide will place a bid on Jamarra Ugle-Hagan with their No. 1 pick, with the key forward considered by recruiters to be a “clear standout” in this year’s draft class. Ugle-Hagan is part of the Western Bulldogs academy, and the Dogs are expected to match the bid and secure the generational talent.

Other top prospects include West Australian key forward Logan McDonald, South Australian key forward Riley Thilthorpe and Victorian midfielder Elijah Hollands.
