Brendon Bolton will reunite with Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn.

Brendon Bolton will make his return to football with Hawthorn as Alastair Clarkson's director of coaching.

The Hawks confirmed Bolton, a former assistant coach who led the club's VFL affiliate Box Hill Hawks, would return to the club where he made his name.

The 40-year-old served as Carlton coach for 77 games before being sacked in June.

“My love of football is as strong as ever and the chance to work with the Hawks’ coaching group is something that really excites me," Bolton said.

“Hawthorn feels like home for me and my family and we are incredibly happy to be back in the brown and gold.”

Senior coach Alastair Clarkson said the club was thrilled to welcome back Bolton, who left in 2015 when he was appointed as the Blues' senior coach.

“In his time at Hawthorn, he displayed a fantastic ability to build strong relationships with the playing and coaching groups, and his teaching background enables him to excel in assisting people with their development," Clarkson said.

“Having the opportunity to be a senior coach, Bolts has gained invaluable experience and knowledge that will help us in taking our coaching group to that next level."

Trades Unplugged: Where to for Jenkins?

Tim Michell

It was only three years ago Josh Jenkins was linked to a big-money move to Brisbane Lions and he was rated one of the breakout forward-rucks in the AFL.

Yet Jenkins found himself in the SANFL for large periods of 2019 and has been linked with a trade as Adelaide prepares to remodel its list.

Robinson backs Charlie to fire

Tim Michell

Brisbane midfielder Mitch Robinson knows forward Charlie Cameron will bounce back from his MCG mauling by Richmond’s Dylan Grimes in next week’s AFL qualifying final.
Cameron kicked two goals but managed just seven touches in last Sunday’s 27-point loss to the Tigers with Grimes basically suffocating the dynamic small forward out of the game.
While the Lions query if all of Grimes’ off-the-ball tactics were legal, Robinson believes his teammate is experienced enough to deliver when the teams meet again at the Gabba on September 7.
“We know he can get in and out of those situations of being held or being mishandled behind the ball,” Robinson told AAP.
“It’s happening a lot this year, it’s not like the first time it’s happened. “Charlie gets some of the best defenders every week and there’s a lot of players in the competition that have gone to him and Charlie’s won those battles. “He’s had a lot of challenges and he’ll take it head on.” Cameron was one of three Lions picked in the All-Australian team along with Harris Andrews and Lachie Neale after a 54-goal season.
Grimes and fellow Tigers defender Bachar Houli were also selected but a surprising omission was Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin.
The Tigers midfielder was a prominent presence throughout last Sunday’s match, including a goal where he burst through two Lions tacklers before kicking home. Robinson is confident the Lions will find a way to negate Martin’s influence in next weekend’s clash.
“You can stop him. I’ve seen players do it before,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of times where my role is on him and I’ve, self-proclaimed, won that battle at stages.
“It’s more a team defence … we’re not just going to focus on Dusty because we saw that (Dion) Prestia can pop up and have 30 (disposals) and other blokes can have an impact.
“It’s not like we’re all going to go to him, I think Fages has spoken publicly about focusing our hunt.
“We won a lot of key statistics last week that didn’t correlate to the scoreboard but hopefully we can tidy up a few things and go from there.”

Young rucks re-sign with Tigers

Tim Michell

Richmond has rewarded emerging ruckmen Ivan Soldo and Mabior Chol for breakout seasons with contract extensions.

The pair have recommitted to the Tigers until the end of 2021.

“We’re really pleased with both Ivan and Mabior’s development so far," Richmond list manager Blair Hartley said.

"They’ve worked really hard with their coaches and teammates to continue to improve.

“They’re both great competitors, and important contributors to our team."

Lachie Neale says he’d “cash out” if he was the punter who stands to win more than $50,000 if the Brisbane Lions star takes home the Brownlow Medal.

Neale said he had been made aware of Jordan Robertson’s longstanding multi bet, which needed Jeremy Cameron to win the Coleman Medal and Neale to claim the Brownlow Medal.

The $50 bet at 1071-1 odds has attracted plenty of attention on Twitter after Robertson shared a screen shot.

Robertson placed the wager on February 22 and his latest cash out offer from Sportsbet was $9817.50.

Asked whether he was aware of the bet at a press conference this week, Neale said: “I have seen that. I don’t think I am allowed to talk about betting. I’d be cashing out. I don’t think I’ll win the Brownlow.”

Neale described the bet as “pretty gutsy”.

After Ben Brown kicked 10 goals against Port Adelaide in Round 22 to overtake Cameron in the Coleman ace, Robertson tweeted: “Not the best thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning. I still stand by my decision not to cash out and take the risk.”

He has been offered $7046, $7854, $10,471 and $4869 in recent months to cash out.

Even Herald Sun chief football reporter Mark Robinson has got behind Robertson, tweeting: “The punting world is with you mate”.

Neale said he expected one of the other favourites, who include Patrick Dangerfield, Patrick Cripps and Marcus Bontempelli, to win the Brownlow.

"I’ve heard the talk and a lot of my mates send me messages about that stuff. But I am certainly channelling all my energy into the next few weeks," he said.

Patrick Dangerfield has the perfect AFL body structure.

That’s the opinion of outfitter to our sporting stars, Sam Koulis.

The man affectionately known as ‘Sammy’ from Sam & Ko was tasked with making the blazers for the 22 members of the All Australian team.

Dangerfield, Sammy says, wears a 42 regular, and it’s his “waistline and shoulders” that make the Brownlow Medalist Cat his pick to dress for a modelling shoot.

He nominated West Coast powerhouse Jeremy McGovern and Carlton jet Patrick Cripps among the most challenging to fit, while Brisbane defensive rock Harris Andrews’ “arms are massive.”

“Obviously McGovern, you don’t think it, but he’s a massive unit,” he said on SEN radio.

“Paddy Cripps is huge, but he was difficult. Paddy is in between a 112 and a 108, so I had to cut it in between to make it look nice and slim on him.

Sammy said superstar Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn had “no shoulders” wearing a svelte 42 extra long, while Tom Hawkins had an “unusual” build: “he was wide and narrow through the waistline”.

Work on the eye-catching golden-lined blazers began last Wednesday with Sammy given “a rough idea” of who was in the side.

Four extra jackets were then added to the order late Sunday — perhaps suggesting the selection panel had made some late changes in their meeting at AFL House that evening — with work finally complete at 4am Monday morning.

Incredibly, he says he did all the suits by eye: “I had to guess”.

“Obviously the players never know that they are in it so I don’t have any contact with any players,” he said.

“Because I’ve done it for so long, I could see from the eye, I’m pretty talented there.

Betts confirms Suns interest

Lincoln Moore

Eddie Betts has confirmed Gold Coast has shown interest in signing him for next season, but denied suggestions of a contract offer.

"I can say right no there has been no offer,’’ Betts told FIVEaa Breakfast on Thursday morning.

“There has been interest, but no offer … That’s where it’s at.”

The Adelaide veteran also moved to quash rumours which circulated on Wednesday he had been delisted despite having a contract for 2020.

EAGLES WARY OF PLUCKY DONS: GAFF

Michael Randall

West Coast will be on red alert for Essendon’s dashing defenders in next Thursday’s elimination final clash at Optus Stadium.

Essendon’s slingshot style from defence is one of their major weapons, with rebounding kings Adam Saad and Conor McKenna the two most dangerous. Although West Coast beat Essendon by 35 points in round 14 this season, they copped an embarrassing 28-point loss in Perth a year earlier. In that match, Essendon slammed home the first eight goals of the match to stun the home team.

West Coast will start as hot favourites in next week’s elimination final, but Eagles midfielder Andrew Gaff is wary of how dangerous the Bombers can be. “We performed really well against them after our bye this year, but the year before they carved through us,” Gaff said.

“We understand what it’s like when we can play well against them, but also what happens when they’re up and about.

“They played really well against Freo a couple of weeks ago, so they know how to win over here.” Essendon haven’t won a final since 2004, and the pressure is on coach John Worsfold to break that losing run.

Worsfold’s position has been put under the spotlight for large chunks of this season, and the Eagles expect the veteran coach to have his troops firing. “He knows what to do. He’s been around long enough,” Gaff said. “When his back is against the wall, he’s proven so many times he can pull something out of the hat.

“We expect Essendon to play really well. They’ve got some really good guys coming back. They’re going to be tough to beat.” West Coast are set to be boosted by the return of Nic Naitanui against the Bombers, while Will Schofield is a chance to earn a recall.

The Bombers are awaiting a fitness update on Michael Hurley (shoulder), but Dyson Heppell (foot), Orazio Fantasia (hip), Jake Stringer (soreness), and Cale Hooker (illness) are set to return.

The rumour mill has swirled around Darcy Moore ever since he left the field and failed to complete Collingwood's clash against Essendon last Friday night.

Everything from a hamstring tear, to mental weakness had been thrown around about the star key defender, amid fears his gammy hammies would keep him out of the Pies' Qualifying final against Geelong on Friday-week.

But coach Nathan Buckley has put the issue bid, saying today the 23-year-old was a lock for the Cats.

“Darce will play,” he said on SEN radio this morning.

“He, like the rest of us and the rest of the players, (will) train up and prepare at your best and get some work in at the session tomorrow and get some time away.

“We’ve got a relatively short week into the game, so we’re looking forward to what that is and Darcy is just one that’s in the process of getting his mind, body and spirit absolutely ready to perform on the night.”

Buckley said Moore played 90 minutes in his return from the soft tissue injury he suffered against West Coast in Round 17.
