AFL social media star Daniel Gorringe has pledged his permanent support to the Gold Coast Suns divisive new look, adding a tattoo of the club’s new logo to his left buttock.
Gorringe, a former first round draft pick himself who registered 22 AFL games with the Suns, is now one of the biggest new-age AFL media names, boasting in excess of 250,000 Instagram followers on both his personal account and his ‘Dan Does Footy’ page, while the Dan Does Footy podcast is one of Australia’s most popular sports podcasts.
The new ink was inspired by the Suns ‘fearless’ rebrand, where the club unveiled a new logo and all-red ‘stealth’ guernsey. It sits beside a previous tattoo he got of former Suns coach Stuart Dew in early 2022, which came about after he posted on his social media that he would get Dew’s face tattooed on him if the Suns beat Carlton in round 21, 2021 – which they did.
“It’s good, I think it’s actually enhanced the tattoo,” Gorringe said of the new addition.
“We have the ‘OG’ Suns one, now the Suns (have) rebranded so I have to rebrand, we can now say the rebrand is completed with this tattoo, it’s very good.”
Gorringe had initially hoped to get the logo over the top of the yellow footy Dew was kicking, but was advised against it by the tattoo artist.
He said the Suns’ new guernsey, which had been unveiled earlier on Friday morning as the club’s launch event of its new brand, had grown on him.
“I didn’t realise we were going brighter up top with the gradient,” Gorringe said.
“So (its) the only guernsey to be of the gradient style in the AFL, like everything it grows on you, in the flesh it’s very cool.”
The Suns unveiled their new-look 2025 home strip in style at Justin Park in Burleigh Heads on Friday morning – despite a minor hitch – pulling off a black sheet to reveal a large-scale display of the guernsey in front of the anticipating crowd.
The event also featured everything from BMX stunts from Nitro Circus performers, to fire twirling and a wildlife tent with snakes, spiders and a crocodile.
Russell Marks, who had been a Suns fan since the club’s earliest days in 2009, thought the new look was “fantastic” but added there could have been room for more representation of the sun.
New recruit and reigning Richmond best and fairest winner Daniel Rioli said the guernsey design was “pretty cool”.
“II can’t wait to wear and actually put on the jumper with the boys in round one,” Riloi said.
“It’s a very exciting time for the football club.”
