The Sydney Swans have completed their list changes ahead of next month’s draft, delisting injury-cruelled ruckman Sam Naismith, James Bell and Ben Ronke.
They were the only remaining Swans from this year’s list without their future decided, with Naismith’s journey coming to an end after three knee reconstructions.
Sydney placed the 30-year-old big man on the inactive list in February and announced he would not play in the 2022 season after a two-part surgery, the second of which was completed 12 months ago.
Naismith, who graduated from the club’s Academy program, looked to have a bright future after a breakthrough 2016 season that included playing in the grand final loss to Western Bulldogs – but he played only 17 more games.
The last of his 30 AFL matches was in round 4, 2020.
The Swans are well-stocked for ruckmen after trading for Tom Hickey and Peter Ladhams, as well as selecting Lachie McAndrew in last year’s mid-season draft.
Sam Reid served as Sydney’s back-up ruckman for most of this past season, with emerging key forwards Joel Amartey and Hayden McLean also capable of filling that role.
Fellow Academy product Bell played 28 matches, including 12 last year, and showed promise but could never cement a senior spot.
Ronke made a blistering start to his AFL career after being a rookie draft selection in 2016, kicking seven goals in his third game then five more in match 11.
But injuries played a role in him finishing with 39 goals from 44 appearances.
Swans football boss Charlie Gardiner thanked the trio for their “important” contributions.
“Sam has unfortunately faced significant injury setbacks over the past five seasons, undergoing three ACL repairs,” Gardiner said.
“Over the journey, he has shown enormous dedication and resilience during his rehabilitation and training.
“James showed potential at AFL level, featuring in 12 games in 2021, including the finals series. He has also displayed strong performances at VFL, where he has continued to develop his game.
“Ben also faced considerable injury setbacks over the past three seasons, but managed to play some consistent football at VFL level this year.”
