AFL 2022: Every club’s predicted 22 for Round 11 of the AFL season

Carlton is flying and could easily go into Sunday’s blockbuster against Collingwood unchanged, but could the inclusion of Jack Martin give the Blues the spark they need?

The Crows have only played two ruckmen once in Matthew Nicks’ time as senior coach but might have to do it again after Reilly O’Brien’s monster game at SANFL level. The Crows leadership group member kicked a goal and had 37 disposals, 11 marks, 13 clearances and 42 hit-outs. Kieran Strachan also played well against St Kilda, meaning the Crows could try a dual-ruck combo against Geelong. Matt Crouch had 35 disposals in the SANFL and would add to a Crows outfit who have been lacking in the contested area of the game recently. Key defender Jordon Butts should return after a stint in Covid-19 protocols. A corked quad to Josh Rachele is set to speed up the Crows’ plans to manage the young gun, while Darcy Fogarty had just the five touches against the Saints.

Hugh McCluggage is still a chance to face the Giants after avoiding a serious hamstring injury but suspect the Lions to play it safe with crunch games against Fremantle and St Kilda to follow. Dan McStay is also an outside chance to return early from his injury but again the Lions don’t need to panic despite a shock loss to Hawthorn last week. Tom Fullarton was great against the Hawks but Marcus Adams looms as a certain starter.

The Blues could easily go into Sunday’s clash with the Magpies without any changes. But if Jack Martin proves his fitness, they are likely to bring him in to add some spark. Paddy Dow’s form in the VFL means he isn’t far away from winning a spot back. It would be hard to displace anyone in the team that beat Sydney last week. Jack Carroll is going to be a very good player in the future and he hasn’t done anything wrong. But he may benefit from a break this week.

Not expecting many changes for the Magpies ahead of a big Sunday clash with Carlton. Ollie Henry is a certainty to come into the starting 22 after his four goals as the medi-sub in the big win over Fremantle. The man he replaced on the field, Mason Cox, will likely miss with his finger injury. Jordan Roughead will be close to returning and there will be consideration given to including Aiden Begg in Cox’s absence. But the Magpies will know the Blues are a little down on big man power with Harry McKay and Marc Pittonet still out. Tyler Brown might be used as the spare parts man in the ruck as he was last week.

Forward Matt Guelfi was subbed out of the loss to Richmond on Saturday night with a suspected hamstring injury in the last quarter, while defender Mason Redman was offered a one-match suspension for striking Tiger Dion Prestia. Fellow defender Jordan Ridley will be in the mix to return after missing the clash with the Tigers under AFL Health and Safety protocols. Midfielder Jye Caldwell didn’t quite prove his fitness last week after a shoulder complaint, but is a good chance to return against the Power. Key forward Harrison Jones returned from an ankle injury in the VFL on the weekend but might need another run in the seconds before returning to AFL level.

With Patrick Dangerfield set for a stint on the sidelines to mend his troublesome calf, Cats fans should be set to see highly-touted youngster Cooper Stephens get a crack at earning regular senior selection. Chris Scott labelled ruck Rhys Stanley and midfielder Quinton Narkle (both ankle) as “close” to playing last weekend and Stanley will be welcomed back once fit. Gryan Miers and his new haircut was the latest Cat to be “managed” as the medical-sub and a return beckons in place of Francis Evans, who was quiet against Port Adelaide.

It’s time for Stuart Dew to unleash youngster Elijah Hollands after he produced a 25 disposal-two goal performance in the VFL. The former top ten draft pick has yet to play a game after an injury-plagued start to his career but a solid base of football this year opens the door for him to make his debut.

The Giants made a raft of changes last week and there’s still a bit of uncertainty about a few players. Tim Taranto has a back issue and teammate Jacob Hopper indicated on Sunday: “he will have to have some time off to get that right.” Braydon Preuss and Nick Haynes should come back in but it will be a difficult selection meeting as most the Giants players were solid against the lowly-placed Eagles.

James Harmes is still at least a week away while Jack Viney is in line to return after being a late out against North Melbourne. Toby Bedford showed some positive signs when subbed on for Ed Langdon. Langdon remains a chance to play after being cleared of internal damage. Jake Melksham was quiet but Simon Goodwin might back the veteran in another week. Christian Salem and Michael Hibberd won’t be far away from being available for AFL selection.

The Roos are yet to reveal the extent of Curtis Taylor’s injury to his ribs but Atu Bosenavulagi looms as a likely replacement given the VFL side had a bye last weekend. Coach David Noble indicated in his post-match press conference that Callum Coleman-Jones and Jaidyn Stephenson still had work to do at the reserve level: “They’ve got to go back to work, they’ve got to get on the training track, put some performances in at VFL, and they have to vie for their spot back again.”

The Tigers scored a fourth-straight win against Essendon on Saturday night, but it came at a cost with forwards Tom Lynch (hamstring) and Kane Lambert (hip) suffering injuries. Hunter Clark has now had two games back in the VFL after being sidelined for the start of the season with a shoulder injury and was impressive with 31 disposals against Carlton’s reserves on the weekend. Tom Highmore also starred at VFL level with 26 disposals and 17 marks down back to push a strong case for a recall. Forward Jack Higgins will be available to return from concussion protocols, but given his medical history the Saints might put him on ice for another week.

The Tom Hickey/Peter Ladhams combo just didn’t seem to click against Carlton so suspect John Longmire to make a change in that area. Joel Amartey had a day out in the VFL with four goals and 18 disposals but Hayden McLean has been impressive at AFL level so he gets the nod. Braeden Campbell was fantastic as sub and deserves his place back in the side. James Rowbottom should be a straight swap for Josh Kennedy who is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has flagged that livewire forward Cody Weightman (collarbone) and ruckman Tim English (illness) could return against West Coast. Who makes room for English? It is likely to be Jordon Sweet or Zaine Cordy. Robbie McComb may be the one to make way for Weightman. Norm Smith Medallist Jason Johannisen (calf), Taylor Duryea (illness), Mitch Wallis (foot) will all be tested. Stefan Martin (shoulder) is one to two weeks away.
