Most players in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership are finding their feet at age 20.

But not Lily Rogan.

The young gun who already has NRLW experience has been entrusted with the captaincy of the Illawarra Steelers as they gear up for their 2024 campaign.

The news came as a shock to the young gun as the Steelers launched their season.

“It was a big surprise. I didn’t really have that on my list of goals but it’s an awesome one to add,” she said.

“I’m happy that they see that within me. You never really need the recognition but it’s nice to have.”

Rogan is still buzzing after making her debut with the Roosters last season, with the centre taking on board the chance to learn from two of the best in the game at her position.

“It was pretty surreal and a huge honour,” she said.

“I was stoked to have my first year with the Sydney Roosters. They have a lot of my idols in the team like Jess (Sergis) and Issy (Isabelle Kelly). I’ve always looked up to them and have my game structured around how they play and how aggressive they are on the field.

“It was great to learn from them first-hand and the amazing coach Strangey (John Strange).”

Having that opportunity is something not lost on Rogan, and she wants to be able to add that to her leadership palate for the upcoming season.

“I don’t think it will change too much how I go about my training and playing, but I’ll share the knowledge of my NRLW experience, bring in that professionalism and encourage the girls.

“I’ll do as best as I can with advice from Scissors (Jamie Szczerbanik)

“I’m really sociable and like having a good relationship with everyone in the team. I think it makes for a better team environment. Having good connections with all the girls will be beneficial.
“I want to be someone they can come to if they need.”

After playing her junior footy with Milton/Ulladulla, Rogan went on to come through the Steelers pathways at Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale level.

With the U19s women currently undefeated and a few expected to make the leap to HNWP level this year, the skipper said she’ll be there to guide them through the rise to senior footy.

“Not too long ago I was in their position. Things do change quickly and I really benefited from having the more experienced girls last year in Keeley (Davis), Kezie (Apps) and Emma (Tonegato).

“Just observing them on and off the field, and how they went about their training, nutrition, recovery and stuff like that.

“I hope the younger girls can look up to me. I’m not too much older than them but they can look to me if they need and they can pick up a few things if needed.”
