But Fiorente turned today’s clash against Shamus Award into a one-horse affair as he won
the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) as his rival faded to finish sixth.
Star three-year-old Shamus Award had bragging rights in their only meeting before today, leading all the way in the Cox Plate.
But Fiorente exacted revenge as he quickly claimed Shamus Award in the straight and then held off Green Moon and the fast-finishing Foreteller to score another Group 1 victory.
At Warwick Farm, Boban bounced back to form with a stirring victory over New Zealand superstar It’s A Dundeel in the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) against spring star Boban.
Fiorente, Boban and It’s A Dundeel are on a collision course and are due to meet in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during The Championships at Royal Randwick next month.
