A 143-year-old estate in Beaconsfield recognised by the National Trust of Victoria and an 1886-built Mt Macedon property protected by the National Trust are among the grand inclusions.

Homes which have been given a new lease on life through creative renovations and conversions also feature.

Take your pick from a former Methodist church in Melbourne’s north turned divine digs, an apartment with views of the iconic Skipping Girl Vinegar sign or a 93-year-old Hawthorn address with the modern addition of an underwater games room.

High calibre homes are often connected to famous people and there are plenty of them mentioned in the list, too – even royalty.

Near Ballarat, an opulent house where Prince George, who later became King George, dropped in for tea with his brother Prince Albert during the late 1800s is one such property.

Another standout is a Surf Coast Shire home where scenes for the 1970s hit film Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson, were filmed.

The scenic home ‘Separation Creek’ has also made the list.

The Herald Sun’s property reporters see many stunning properties throughout the year, and whittling them down to just 50 is always a tough task.

But as we know, it’s always a subjective conclusion, so we’re inviting readers to let us know if they agree or disagree with our decisions. See the full list below and cast your vote on if the home is overrated or underrated.
