The verdict is in: Victorians rank the iconic ‘Pole House’ as the state’s best home for 2022.

Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun readers have had their say and pushed the Great Ocean Road property to the top spot, after it came in at number 16 in the original Victoria’s Top 50 Homes list.

Of the thousands of votes cast, the Pole House received the most votes of any home, with 32 per cent saying it was underrated in the rankings. Renowned for being one of Australia’s most photographed properties, it can be found on the shores of Fairhaven, stilted 40m above the beach.

Engineer and architect Frank Dixon built the original, letterbox-style wooden house in the 1970s, who said it “moved like a giant tree”.

“It’s designed to sway up to six inches and withstand winds as strong as Cyclone Tracey,” Mr Dixon said.

One of the biggest surprises on the list was a stunning Ivanhoe mansion, which jumped into the top three of the readers’ choice, after it was ranked at 46 on the original list.

The estate, which boasts a man-made waterfall, private Yarra River boat ramp and golf simulator reigns supreme when it comes to water-themed properties — which was inspired by noted architect Frank Lloyd-Wright’s iconic Fallingwater house in the US.

Overall, readers tended to rate grand or heritage estates far higher than some of the more modern or quirky homes that made the list.

Another property that voters thought should be much higher was the Jolley Road Estate in Tonimbuk, which is on the market right now. The luxury rural estate has an Olympic-sized horse arena, and could be set to break the suburb’s house price record by $7m.

The home at 115 Jolley Rd, Tonimbuk was loved by voters, and could be purchased right now.
