Award-winning footy journalist Tom Browne has sold his renovated Prahran house under the hammer after it spent more than two years on and off the market.

The outgoing Channel 7 chief football reporter and his wife Tara listed the 44 Perth St home with a $2.1m-$2.3m price guide — a $500,000 haircut from when they first placed it on the market in April 2021.

At that time the listing lingered for about 600 days before it was pulled last December.

After Browne’s shock retirement from Channel 7 and Triple M in July, he listed the home again as he gears up to move to Sydney for his new gig with Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham’s MA Financial Group.

Two buyers competed for the keys to the period home at the Saturday morning auction, which kicked off with a $2.15m offer.

Bids moved “relatively quickly” from there, surpassing the $2.3m reserve until reaching a $2.366m sale to a young couple.

Jellis Craig Stonnington auctioneer Nathan Waterson said Browne was happy with the result.

“He’s looking forward to now being able to move to Sydney and focus on his new adventure,” Mr Waterson said.

AUCTION REPLAYS AND RESULTS

It was one of about 1054 properties PropTrack expected to go under the hammer across the state this week in what could be the first Super Saturday since Autumn.

And this weekend could be one of the strongest winter epilogues to the auction market to date.

The 1060 auctions forecast by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria could see the market just eclipse the record for the final week of August, set in 2015 with 1058 auctions.

A three-bedroom townhouse in Pascoe Vale sold for $755,000 under the hammer after two buyers went toe-to-toe for the keys in a fast-paced auction.

While about six other buyers attended the auction, they were outpaced by the others who kicked it off with a $690,000 offer.

McGrath Coburg director Michael Chan called the 310sq m property on the market at $750,000, before it sold to a young family looking to move in straight away.

“They wanted something that was already done and in good condition that they could move into straight away,” Mr Chan said.

He added that the underbidder was a downsizing from a house in NSW which they recently sold before moving to Victoria.

More than 57 groups inspected the home throughout its campaign.

It had a $685,000-$750,000 asking price ahead of the auction.

6 THE CROSSOVER, CARNEGIE

Another strong result was seen in Carnegie, where a two-bedroom house flew $175,000 over reserve.

Three buyers competed for the keys to the 6 The Crossover pad on Saturday morning, when offers opened at $1.4m.

Bidding rose in about $25,000 increments for the remainder of the auction before the home sold under the hammer for $1.675m to a family who knocked the $1.5m reserve out of the park.

Ray White Carnegie partner Josh Hommelhoff handled the sale and said the property had been with one family for about 50 years.

Mr Hommelhoff added that the successful purchasers planned to knock down the existing house and build a new one in its place.

It was first listed with a $1.45m-$1.55m price tag.

Over in Brunswick, a double-fronted Edwardian-style home with a heritage overlay notched a strong $1.26m sale under the hammer.

Two young families competed for the keys to 4 Hanover St after the auction kicked off with a $1.15m vendor bid.

Barry Plant Inner City Group auctioneer Jarrod Couch called the 400sq m property on the market after a $1.25m offer was placed, before it sold to a family who loved the period facade and location.

“It’s very close to trams and there’s a park around the corner,” Mr Couch said.

About 43 groups inspected the home over its campaign after it was listed with a $1.15m-$1.25m asking price.

Kicking off a hot Saturday of auctions was the sale of a four-bedroom house in Gladstone Park.

Eight buyers pushed the 75 Lenoak St pad $101,000 over reserve on Saturday morning, leading to a strong $801,000 sale.

The home’s original owner was selling the property after 45 years in a “big decision” to downsize.

Ray White Gladstone Park auctioneer Phillip Mercieca said the vendor couldn’t believe the pace of the auction and was “over the moon” with the result.

The auction was brought forward by two weeks due to popular demand after 89 groups inspected the property over its campaign.

After it was called on the market, about four buyers continued to bid until the end, when it sold to a local family looking to complete a full renovation.

It was originally listed with a $630,000-$670,000 price guide.

EARLIER IN THE WEEK

8 Morton Rd, Burwood, scored a strong result under the hammer.
8 Morton Rd, Burwood, scored a strong result under the hammer.

A brand new, five-bedroom house in Burwood flew $255,000 over reserve on Wednesday evening after three families fought “to the death” for the keys.

The vendors of the 8 Morton Rd pad have owned the property for more than 20 years and recently completed a knockdown-rebuild as they prepare to downsize.

With a spacious floorplan, stylish kitchen, covered outdoor entertaining area and a pizza oven, the home was an attractive purchase for local families.

Buxton Camberwell agent Brett Phelan even brought the auction forward by two weeks due to strong demand.

Bidding kicked off at $1.8m at the 6pm auction, before rising in $100,000 increments between two buyers to reach $2.05m, at which point a third buyer jumped in with a $2.09m offer.

The auction pace picked up from there before auctioneer Rohan Cleary announced the property on the market at $2.15m.

A $1000 counter offer was placed, before the winning bid of $2.155m knocked the other two parties out of the race.

The home sold to a local couple with three daughters who gifted the vendors a $255,000 premium on the $1.9m reserve.
