The AFL finals are done and dusted, but Carlton senior assistant coach Ashley Hansen has scored a late win, selling his Yarraville under the hammer on Saturday morning.
Hansen, a former West Coast Eagles premiership player, was also an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs for nine years and helped the club to their 2016 premiership victory.
While the Blues missed out on the Grand Final, the assistant coach has kicked his own goal with the auction for 5 Hance St, which soared $40,000 above expectations.
Two bidders fought for the keys in front of a crowd of about 75 people — including a handful of Carlton fans showing their support.
Bidding kicked off at $950,000 before offers quickly reached $1.04m, when the property was called on the market.
It sold for $1.08m to a young couple currently renting nearby and looking for their first home.
Jas Stephens auctioneer Craig Stephens said Hansen was “quite relieved” to get a sale under the hammer after a busy finals season with the Blues.
The coach is now upsizing to a larger house in the same area after recently welcoming the birth of his first son.
Mr Stephens added that the result was a testament to the strength in the Yarraville market for homes at the $1m-$1.1m mark.
Hansen previously told Property Confidential he loved the area for its village lifestyle, community spirit and demographic of young families coming in each year.
“Parks such as the gardens and Cruickshank are amazing for our golden retriever,” he said.
It comes after PropTrack predicted the first Super Saturday of the month, with 1130 auctions expected across Melbourne this week — 56 cent more than in the first week of October last year.
7/18 THE CORSO, PARKDALE
Five bidders went up for a two-bedroom unit in Parkdale on Saturday, attracting a crowd of about 75 people.
Bidding opened at $660,000 before quickly reaching the $700,000 reserve.
It eventually sold for $715,000 to a young British buyer and her Australian partner who were buying their first home together.
Both the sellers and buyers were emotional at the auction, which was led by Ray White Cheltenham auctioneer Greg Brydon and agent Trevor Bowen.
Mr Bowen said it was a “surreal experience” and he had never seen both parties cry after an auction.
The agent sold the sellers an off-market home nearby about a year ago.
After completing a renovation, the couple can now move into their new home ahead of the upcoming birth of their child.
The property initially had a $650,000-$699,000 price tag.
22A UNSWORTH RD, RINGWOOD NORTH
Over in Ringwood North, seven competitive buyers pushed offers for a four-bedroom house $135,000 above expectations.
The auction opened with a $1m offer, followed by silence in a slow start to the day.
But it wasn’t long until multiple buyers threw their hats in the ring, with bids rising in $25,000 increments.
The property was called on the market after a $1.33m offer was placed, before it sold for $1.465m under the hammer.
McGrath Box Hill director Ellie Gong and agent Wilson Shi had the initial $1m-$1.1m listing.
27 SMITH ST, NOBLE PARK
A three-bedroom house in Noble Park flew $80,000 over reserve on Saturday morning after a tight race between two competitive buyers.
The opening bid of $660,000 immediately matched the vendor’s reserve for the home, which was an investment property owned by Ray White Oakleigh property manager Penny Costa who was “over the moon” with the result.
Ray White Oakleigh agent Leigh Kelepouris handled the sale while auctioneer Robert Cincotta called the auction.
AUCTION REPLAYS AND RESULTS
Five bidders registered to bid but the majority were knocked out of the competition after the opening offer.
The two remaining buyers pushed offers up to a $740,000 sale to a young couple who were looking to buy their first home and had already missed out on a few properties.
It was initially listed for $600,000-$660,000.
19 MAY ST, BENTLEIGH EAST
Over in Bentleigh East, a four-bedroom house fetched a $2.06m sale under the hammer after initially passing in.
The successful buyer placed a $1.85m offer to open the auction, before the home passed in and further negotiations led to its sale.
Buxton Bentleigh director Chris Hassall and agent Melissa Hetherington handled the sale of the 586sq m property, which attracted about 60 inspections over its campaign.
“We’re seeing strong auction results in the McKinnon school zone,” Mr Hassall said.
“It’s like a two speed market, it’s holding well.”
The dwelling was first listed for $1.8m-$1.9m.
EARLIER IN THE WEEK
Kicking off October auction results was the strong midweek sale of a four-bedroom house in Greensborough.
Despite rainy conditions, the 51 Narbethong Drive property attracted three bidders and a handful of spectators at the Thursday evening auction.
Taking shelter on the home’s rear porch, the buyers went toe-to-toe for the keys, pushing offers $141,000 over the $940,000 reserve.
A young couple placed the winning $1.081m bid,
Morrison Kleeman Greensborough director Craig Parker handled the sale of the property, which was initially listed with a $860,000-$940,000 price guide.
