Gold Coast Spit draft master plan

One of The Spit’s best-loved institutions will be redeveloped and expanded under fresh plans lodged with the council.

Peter’s Fish Market, which sits on land owned by the state government, will be transformed into a restaurant, function centre and seafood shop as part of the area’s “glow up” under the Spit Masterplan.

The market has been trading on the Spit for more than 30 years and frequently has lines out the door ahead of Easter and Christmas with shoppers looking for fresh prawns.

The new two-storey building, put forward by the state government, will sit closer to the water. It will also feature in-house dining and recreate the existing takeaway facilities along with new public footpaths along the northern, eastern, and western boundaries including a new section of the Broadwater pathway.

A new public road and carpark will also be built on its northern side.

The existing business will continue to operate through the redevelopment process, with the project to be completed in multiple stages.

The new complex will be built first before the business relocates and the existing structure is demolished to make way for the second stage, which will include the carpark.

The plans were lodged with council earlier in June, just six months after the state government locked in its future.

The new restaurant is the first part of the state government’s transformation of the run-down Carter’s Basin area, which includes the city’s trawler fleet and Fishermen’s Co-Op area.

State Development Minister Grace Grace vowed in January the site would continue to be home to the local fishing fleet, which will gain “renewed and reconfigured facilities” alongside the fish market.

“The Spit is one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic attractions and we know there’s even more potential to unlock its immense opportunities,” she said at the time.

“We’re now seizing this opportunity and want to partner with industry to support marine tourism ventures on the Gold Coast.

“This is an opportunity for a world-class commercial marina with more berths, along with a seafood and marine tourism hub.

“I’m also very pleased that under our plan, Carter’s Basin will continue to be the home to the local fishing fleet.

“The land neighbouring the site will also be home to an even bigger and better Peter’s Fish Market, which has been trading at the Spit for more than 30 years.”
