More than a thousand auctions have been wiped from Melbourne’s property market this week amid the city’s extended Covid-19 lockdown.

A total of 1640 homes had been scheduled to go under the hammer this week, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV).

But just 520 of those properties will proceed to auction due to Melbourne’s ongoing lockdown liming inspections and auctions to online.

Despite the lockdown, there will still be plenty of auction action to stream via the Herald Sun’s live blog, with homes in Clayton, Hawthorn, Cheltenham and Doncaster East still pushing ahead.

And to finish off our live coverage with a bang, this sprawling Malvern East pad achieved an incredible $4m-plus sale at auction on Saturday.

Four bidders took the sale of the five-bedroom property above the top end of its $4m-$4.25m asking price, with the keys ultimately handed to a local family with young kids.

Kay & Burton Armadale’s Gowan Stubbings said a total of 112 bids were placed during the auction.

He said the buyers, who had been looking to upsize for a while, had “missed out on a few homes recently”.

“They are very happy to have bought,” he said.

The grand contemporary-style home is set on a 893sq m block and close to Caulfield Grammar.

61 Canopus Drive, Doncaster East

In Doncaster East, 240 people tuned in to watch a “family stunner” in dual school zones sell for $1.495m at online auction.

The four-bedroom brick home was called on the market at $1.32m.

Barry Plant Manningham auctioneer Mark Di Giulio urged buyers to get in on one of the last properties to have held in-person inspections before the state’s sixth lockdown.

“In boxing it’s called the Muhammad Ali — go bang, bang,” he said, willing buyers to place a knockout bid.

“Just imagine kids going to school, walking to the shops.”

It had been listed with a $1.15m-$1.25m price guide.

18 Verene Ave, Templestowe Lower

Bidders came out swinging for the keys to a 900sq m property in Templestowe Lower, which notched a massive $1.553m sale.

The four-bedroom home was called on the market at $1.42m and quickly sped away as strong bids forced the price well above it’s original $1.25m-$1.37m price guide.

Harcourts Manningham auctioneer Nima Goharpey said the home was a slice of prime, “blue-chip real estate”.

It is also in proximity to parks and reserves and within walking distance of Templestowe Heights Primary School and Templestowe College, he said.

2/6 Sunshine Street, Oakleigh East

In Oakleigh East, six bidders pushed the sale of this “domestic delight” above the million-dollar mark.

The four-bedroom townhouse sold for $1.1m at Saturday’s virtual sale — well above its original $900,000-$990,000 price guide.

Situated in a sought-after pocket of the suburb, the property was marketed as the best of “easy-care” and “stylish” living.

The auction was called by Ray White Oakleigh auctioneer Robert Cincotta.

121 Wattletree Street, Craigieburn

In Melbourne’s north, a three-bedroom home in Craigieburn sold under the hammer for $580,000 in a “bargain” sale.

The modest, modern home was initially listed for $519,000-$569,000, with two bidders competing for the keys.

Universal Real Estate’s Gordon Gard said it was a “beautiful property” that had been well maintained by its owners.

“It was their first home and now they want to pass it on to the next family,” he said.

“This is a beautiful property and these properties don’t come by everyday.”

He urged buyers to bid strong amid the state’s rising prices and crazy market.

The 294sq m is in the heart of the Stockland’s Highland Estate.

2/146 Power Street, Hawthorn

An apartment with the “best renovation” has been snapped up in a short but sweet sale this morning.

Two strong bidders took less than 15 minutes to battle it out for the two-bedroom property, which sold for $820,000.

The Agency’s Luke Saville said the light-filled abode had been renovated with the intention of it being a forever home.

“You can see the intricate details and the money that’s been spent,” he said.

The property, which is in a charming 1950s building, was originally listed for $700,000-$750,000.

A young lady placed the winning bid.

22 Cambridge Street, Collingwood

In Collingwood, a lucky buyer used their lucky number to secure the keys to two-storey period home.

After initially passing in at auction, the property sold five minutes later for $1.111m — the buyers’ “lucky number”.

Barry Plant’s Bill Karp, who called the auction, said the home had been in the one family for more than 60 years.

The “well loved” family adobe was snapped up by a bayside buyer who intended to renovate and live at the property, he said.

The 144sq m property was initially listed for $1m-$1.1m.

6 Colonel Street, Clayton

Meanwhile competition was hot for a million-dollar dump in Clayton, which amassed a whopping $1,320,100 sale.

A handful of bidders fought it out over 40 minutes for the run-down building, which was being marketed as a “beautiful new home space” ready for a knockdown rebuild.

The property was called on the market at $1.05m and flew about $200,000 above the top end of it’s initial $1m-$1.1m asking price.

Ray White auctioneer Robert Cincotta entertained viewers with music and pop culture references, dubbing the sale a “Fleetwood Mac”.

“This is Dreams,” he said, referring to the band’s hit song.

He said the 715sq m block and proximity to Clayton Train Station were among the property’s biggest drawcards.

The three bedroom property’s interior was in need of a complete makeover, with broken and mouldy tiles in the bathroom and watermarks on the loungeroom floorboards.

179 Macedon Rd, Templestowe Lower

In Templestowe Lower, a home that was immaculately renovated by a group of friends passed in for $1.505m before selling after auction for $1.6m.

Ray White Cheltenham director Kevin Chokshi said the four-bedroom home was in a “really lovely part of the world”.

“It’s a big family home, a really nice area and it’s turn key — ready to move in,” he said.

Three bidders competed for the stylish pad, which had a $1.4m-$1.5m asking price.

Mr Chokshi said his office had received inquires about the property every day since it went live.

LOCKDOWN THROWS 1000 AUCTIONS OFF

Buxton Hampton East director Paul Sibley said his office had postponed many would-be auctions as a result of campaigns being cut short.

“We’re certainly running out of properties that people have viewed,” Mr Sibley said.

But he said the “demand seems to be there” with all signs pointing to a “big finish to the year” when restriction do lessen again.

It comes amid renewed calls for the government to approve one-on-one inspections for properties during lockdown.

Earlier this week, REIV president Leah Calnan said they were “really conscious of the emotional impact that this lockdown is creating for those who need to find their next property’.

Ms Calnan called for agents and buyers to be able to meet in a safe, one-on-one environment “as soon as possible”.

Meanwhile on-site auctions will continue in regional Victoria with up to 100 people are allowed to attend.

Barry Plant’s Victorian agents will be at the helm of 43 auctions across the state on Saturday, including nine in the Geelong suburb of Highton.
