Basketball star Andrew Bogut lists Beaumaris mansion for sale after council battle over plans

Aussie basketball great Andrew Bogut has made a shock decision to sell his dream Bayside mansion after a long-running battle with council to expand it.

The plush interior of the Bayside home being sold by Aussie basketball great Andrew Bogut has been revealed in a new video.

A glimpse inside the Beaumaris mansion, listed for sale by the former NBA and Aussie Boomers star, shows the level of luxury awaiting a buyer with big pockets.

The elevated “modern Hamptons style’’ property at 401 Beach Rd has views of the bay, a resort style swimming pool, four bedrooms and massive living areas across two levels.

Bogut bought the property for $4.7m in 2015 and adjoining land nearby soon after in a bid to build his dream home across almost 2400 sqm.

But he put the existing home and approved plans for the expanded property on the market this week, seeking expressions of interest at between $11m and $12m

Bogut made the shock decision to put the home on the market “with a heavy heart” after a long-running battle with council over his expansion plans.

Buyers will have the choice of retaining the four-bedroom home and land, building Bogut’s dream beachside home across more than 2370sq m, or tearing up the plans and starting again.

The plans, approved by VCAT after Bogut’s long-running battle with Bayside Council and the Beaumaris Conservation Society, include a rooftop terrace, summer house and half-sized basketball court.

They also include a subterranean wine cellar and tasting room, Olympic size pool, home cinema, fitness centre, therapy and steam rooms, sauna and basement parking for up to 16 cars.

The former Aussie Boomer and NBA star told the Herald Sun the main reason he was selling the property was privacy concerns due to its address being made public.

“I’m an outspoken fella and I get death threats at times, I get all kinds of s--t,’’ he said.

“I just wasn’t comfortable with people knowing exactly where I lived … that was the main thorn in my side.’’

He was weighing up moving interstate or remaining in Victoria, but was frustrated by the red tape required by Bayside councillors.

“We wanted to fight and win and I was definitely motivated by that,’’ he said.

“Hopefully this just wakes some people up that councils aren’t spending our rates as good as they say they are.’’

Bogut hopes a buyer builds his dream home but, in another dig at the council, said “something massive’’ being built on the site would also make him happy.

“I’m quietly hoping a developer buys it and puts up a 10-storey apartment building to be honest with you,’’ he said.

“That would be my dream come true, that would be 55 birthdays all at once.’’

Bogut bought the “modern Hamptons-style’’ property at 401 Beach Rd for $4.7m in 2015 and the nearby block soon after.

They will be advertised on ListingLoop.com.au on Tuesday.

Listing agent Eleisha Doherty said it was “a special and unique property because of its multidimensional nature, the size of the land and its highly desirable beachside location.”

Bogut had planned to build a subterranean wine cellar and tasting room at the property.

“Whether the new owners retain the existing home or develop the architectural masterpiece that Andrew Bogut envisioned, they will have secured one of Melbourne’s most prized addresses in real estate,” she said.

Bogut was “somewhat sad’’ to leave the “beautiful property.

“I’m very disappointed and we do it with a heavy heart,’’ he said.

“We went back and forth with this decision over the past 12 months, even before the VCAT result, we got it specified exactly how we wanted it and finally got all the hard stuff done.

“But it’s just one of those things – we decided to move on from it.’’
