The iconic Rising Sun badge, synonymous with Australian bravery and sacrifice, has inspired part of the striking design of the $550m new Australian War Memorial.

Renders show the roof of the Anzac Hall is influenced by the distinctive badge, worn on the upturned side of a slouch hat and evocative of the Anzac spirit, News Corp can reveal.

It comes as another section of the three-part design, the new Southern Entry by Scott Carver architects, is shortlisted for a top gong at the 2022 World Architecture Festival.

Scott Carver director Doug Southwell said the design was up for the Future Project: Culture category at the awards, the architecture industry’s peak, held in Lisbon from November 30.

“’A place for all’ was the tagline (of the project). School kids, parents, family of people who have served and potentially passed away, and international visitors will all enter via this point,” he said.

“It was really about creating a place where you arrive and gather your thoughts before entering, and equally reflect on the way out, experiencing all kinds of emotions.”

The oculus centrepiece is mathematically an inversion of the current dome, and visitors are naturally drawn to look up at the original building before continuing.

Construction is poised to begin following the contract signing, with the last of the three main partners this week, but the Memorial will remain open.

Lendlease (Anzac Hall) joins Kane Constructions (Southern Entry) and Hindmarsh (C.E.W. Bean Building extension) as the construction companies selected to proceed with the three separate works packages, which will bring the development to life between now and 2028.

Lendlease will also be responsible for delivering the glazed link with translucent roof connecting the heritage building and Anzac Hall.

This link will provide more than 7000sq m of new exhibition space to tell stories of recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Australian War Memorial executive program director Wayne Hitches said the works would ensure the Memorial’s needs were met for the next 50 years.

Proudly worn by soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Force in both World Wars, the Rising Sun badge has become an integral part of the digger tradition.
