The Block bidder Adrian Portelli and what he wanted to do with the winning home

They dubbed him ‘Lambo guy’ on The Block, but the man in the bidding war for Omar and Oz’s house has more expensive tastes than Italian supercars.

Oz Omar house sets Block auction record

The man who was part of a controversial bidding war for Omar and Oz’s house on The Block recently bought a rare supercar for $6.5 million, $1 million more than he bid for the house.

Adrian Portelli, a self-made Melbourne millionaire, pushed the price of Omar Slaimankhel and Ozman “Oz” Abu Malik’s house up to a record $5.6m in a bidding war with serial Block buyer Danny Wallis.

But the purchase would have been small change for Portelli, who made his millions through tech start-ups in Los Angeles and is believed to have a net worth of about $350 million.

Back in August, he travelled to the Monterey Car Show in California to buy one of only 50 Koenigsegg CC850 supercars.

The 33-year-old, who dropped out of university to work as a “jack of all trades, master of none” at his dad’s truck repair business before making his millions, told News Corp he was a firm believer in enjoying his success.

“I like to live hard and fast. You’re only on this planet once, so make the most of it,” he said.

After The Block finale aired, many speculated online that he was a friend of Omar and Oz’s who was there to simply drive up the price of the house.

The bidding war pushed the price well beyond the $4 million reserve and netted Omar and Oz $1.5 million – the single largest win in the history of the Block.

But Portelli, who was dubbed “Lambo guy” after turning up to the auction in a bright yellow Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, said he was genuinely interested in buying the house to use as a prize for his LMCT+ business, a membership lifestyle and rewards program that raffles boats, cars and houses.

“I wasn’t buying it to live in it,” he said.

“You’ve got millions of people watching this show and only one per cent of Australia can afford it, so why not buy the house back and give everyone the chance to win it?” he said.

He wasn’t surprised by the viewer backlash.

“I knew it was coming, given the results of the other auctions. But it is what it is, it’s part of the auction,” he said.

“This is the internet. Everyone has got opinions, speculation and conspiracies but at the end of the day you can’t predict an auction,” he said.

He thought the house went for a fair price.

“I was hovering around the $5.5 million mark. I was trying to amp myself up. I knew the house was worth that much but I’m going to come in there all guns blazing,” he said.

“It’s just unfortunate the way things went.”

He said he had never met Omar and Oz prior to The Block.

“We got put in touch with each other by a mutual friend. I’d never watched the Block so I had no idea who they were. I went and had a look with an open mind and just thought I could do something with it,” he said.

“I was genuinely interested in the house. There was just some other party there that let his emotion and ego get in the way and kept countering,” he said.

Portelli has an amazing rags to riches backstory.

He travelled to Los Angeles to start up a limousine business for celebrities but was struggling to pay the rent on his apartment, so advertised for a boarder.

It turned out to be his lucky break, as his flatmate was a tech wizard, who helped him develop a couple of successful apps that they later sold for big money.

“We created some magic together,” he said.

His real passion is cars, not houses.

The Koenigsegg is part of a collection of “about 30” rare and expensive cars that includes some Aussie classics and rare Italian supercars.

He recently paid $2.8 million for a McLaren Senna GTR painted in the livery of Ayrton Senna’s championship-winning Formula One car. The car can’t be driven on the road.

He also has two of only four HSV GTSR W1 Maloos made.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve loved my cars and now I can buy some of the ones I’ve always dreamt of owning. It’s a blessing,” he said.
