Billy Bob Thornton faces new power struggle as Landman season two streams now
In an era of sanitised television, this unapologetically rough Texas oil series proves viewers still crave the forbidden thrill of bad behaviour and moral ambiguity.
Smoking, swearing, drinking and a hint of skulduggery are the cornerstones of the oil tycoon’s roughneck world and it all returns in spades for the second season of Landman.
Given the political correctness of today’s world, what is so appealing about a series that circles around such a sphere of naughtiness? Well, perhaps it’s just the charm of Billy Bob Thornton playing a role he was born to play.
Critics describe Season 2 of Landman as even better than the first, with the women stepping up to be as savage as the men in the modern-day work and family drama.
Set in the boomtowns of West Texas, Landman follows the fortunes of oil company workers who are willing to get their hands dirty in more ways than one and their billionaire bosses making the most of their black gold.
Co-created by Taylor Sheridan (creator of the series Yellowstone and its prequels 1923 and 1883) and Christian Wallace (host of the Boomtown podcast on which the series is based), the 10 episodes of Season 2 will see secrets rise faster from the earth than the oil.
After M-Tex Oil founder and CEO Monty Miller died from a heart attack at the end of Season 1, his “trophy wife” Cami Miller (Demi Moore) inherits his controlling share and discovers the role embezzlement and fraud may have played in her husband’s death.
Tommy Norris (Thornton) is now president of M-Tex Oil and struggling with family demands as much as the ongoing politics of the oil industry.
Joining the show this season is T.L., Tommy’s father (played by veteran actor Sam Elliott), while returning characters include Angela Norris (Ali Larter), Cooper Norris (Jacob Lofland), Ainsley Norris (Michelle Randolph), Gallino (Andy Garcia), Ariana (Paulina Chavez), Rebecca Savage (Kayla Wallace) and Ryder (Mitchell Slaggert).
Moore’s character is set to be more predominant in this season, while the addition of Elliott to the cast is also sure to bring explosive fireworks.
Thornton received a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination for his role in Season 1, so the awards spotlight will again be on his performance as well as that of Oscar-nominated actress Moore.
The Landman series is based on Wallace’s Boomtown podcast about the big oil boom in West Texas’ Permian Basin in the 21st century.
The Season 1 premiere has had 35 million global streaming viewers since debuting in November 2024, while the finale was the most-watched finale in Paramount+ history.
