Trump ‘liked Malcolm’ but has a ‘special relationship’ with ScoMo

US President Donald Trump has compared the two Australian prime ministers he’s got to know and revealed just how much he likes them.

He might have hung up on Malcolm Turnbull, but he has a “special relationship” with Scott Morrison.

US President Donald Trump has revealed what he thinks about our current and former prime ministers, saying he likes them both “very much”.

Speaking with Sky News anchor Paul Murray outside the White House, Mr Trump was asked why he “pretty obviously” preferred Mr Morrison to Mr Turnbull.

Murray was referencing when Mr Trump fumed down the phone line to Mr Turnbull during their first conversation in January 2017 when the Prime Minister pressured him to fulfil an agreement struck with the Obama administration to take 1250 asylum seekers from Australia.

“I think it is a horrible deal, a disgusting deal that I would have never made. It is an embarrassment to the United States of America,” Mr Trump said at the time.

“As far as I am concerned that is enough Malcolm. I have had it. I have been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day. Putin was a pleasant call. This is ridiculous.”

But it appears all that is behind the pair, with Mr Trump telling Murray he held Mr Turnbull in high regard.

“Well I liked Malcolm... I liked Malcolm very much, but I tell ya Scott is — and I really think they’re both very good people — but I’ve developed a very special relationship with Scott, he’s a great gentleman,” Mr Trump said.

“Scott’s a very strong man, a very good man, and I think he’s somebody that’s respected very much in your country.

“And he had the kind of election that I had so we have something in common. It was a little bit of a surprise and it was a very big victory.”

Mr Trump said he planned to visit Australia soon during the chat ahead of the official US State Dinner held yesterday in Mr Morrison’s honour.

“It’s a great country,” he said.

“I think that’s truly one of the great countries actually. A beautiful place. I was there a couple of times, have a lot of friends there, have a lot of friends here from Australia. Very special people, very strong, great people.”

Mr Morrison is just the second foreign leader to receive the high diplomatic honour of a US state visit during Mr Trump’s administration.

At the dinner, Mr Morrison praised Mr Trump’s “belief in America and its people” and toasted to “100 years of mateship and to 100 more”.

“Australia will never be accused of indifference in our friendship with the United States,” he said.

“Tonight we are reminded that the United States feels the same way, especially under your leadership.”

Mr Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were formally introduced on the South Lawn Friday morning local time to a crowd of thousands which included onlookers, an international press pack and members of the military, in Washington D.C.

Moments later, a black vehicle pulled up, and out stepped Mr Morrison and wife Jennifer.

The pair were greeted by the Trumps with an awkward slip between Melania and Jennifer, unsure of whether to shake hands or hug. The pair eventually exchanged a kiss on each cheek.
