Meghan Markle’s father has branded Prince Harry a “total failure” and suggested his daughter’s mental health struggles was just her being “dramatic”.
Thomas Markle regularly appears in the media to sledge the royal couple, and on Wednesday told the Seven Network’s Sunrise he had doubts about their claims Meghan was suicidal after she joined the royal family.
But the worst insults were for Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who he accused of not properly caring for Meghan.
“I have some doubts about it. The way that it was described in the Oprah show is that she told her husband about it and he went and asked one of the royals about it and said that it would be bad to do it (get help). If my wife or my child came to me and said, ‘I’m having a nervous breakdown (and) thinking about suicide’, I would take them immediately to a doctor.
“I would not go and check with somebody first. I think Harry dropped the ball on this, and I think he is obviously not very supportive.”
Mr Markle said he thought Meghan might have been “a little dramatic”.
Asked about claims in the press that Meghan dominated Harry, he said he was in no doubt they were true.
“My daughter is very controlling. She has been raised to be that way. Harry has not shown me much of anything. Like I said, I have yet to meet the man, he did not bother to come down to ask for her hand, I know very little about him except that he still acts like a 12-year-old boy. I know that my daughter, both of my daughters as a matter of fact, are very controlling and could certainly control any man.”
He’d heard stories she had bullied palace staff and wasn’t sure what to make of it.
“I really can’t say much about it. The only thing I know for sure is that because she was working on a certain television show that she was used to the idea of waking up at five in the morning. I’m sure nobody else was (at the palace), so there might have been a problem there, but again, I hear these things, that she loses her temper and throws things and I guess that is possible, again I don’t know most of the staff at the palace.”
Mr Markle said he would still like to meet his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, and revealed he had offers from lawyers in the US who floated the idea of suing Meghan.
“In the US, some grandparents have taken legal action to see their grandchildren. I have had offers from several lawyers pro bono, we do have a right to sue to see our grandchildren. To me that is like turning this into some kind of game and using them as pawns – and I will not sue to see them because I just think that is using them and it is not what I plan to do and I don’t want to see Harry and Meghan do the same thing.
“They should not be used, they are just kids, babies. I will wait.”
Mr Markle said he didn’t have Meghan’s phone number, but had sent her flowers for her birthday and when the children were born, but got no response.
He had tried to get his ex-wife Doria to mediate between him and Meghan, but she too ignored him.
“I have tried a few times to call her and not been able to get through. I have also left a couple of letters for her on her porch with no response. Doria and I did always get along, it should not be a problem but I’m sure that Doria does whatever Meghan and Harry tell her to do. That seems to be a dead end for me, as well.”
