A Russian military commander and MP has claimed the fastest way for Vladimir Putin to beat Ukraine is by using hypersonic missile strikes to “wipe out the British Isles”.
Hardliner Andrey Gurulev appeared on Kremlin state TV evidently frustrated at Moscow’s lack of progress in the war.
A lieutenant general who served as a Russian tank commander, he called on Putin to break the deadlock in Ukraine by attacking the UK - and neutral Ireland - to destroy the British Crown.
Rather than leading to full-scale world war, he asserted that this would halt the Ukrainian conflict and bring victory to Putin.
“To serious things - London understands there is no defence against [Russian] hypersonic missiles,” he told viewers.
“They understand, too, that the main target isn’t Germany or France - but the British Isles.
“It is the closest target, it’s a nice target, which would allow [us] to change the outcome of this conflict [in Ukraine].
“So by completely wiping out the British Isles I think we’ll finish this story.”
By specifying the British Isles, he included Ireland, which has been neutral since the 1930s.
He claimed that carpet bombing by Zircon missiles would reduce the UK to Third World status - and the West would cease supporting Ukraine, which would then buckle to Putin “because no-one will have a desire to do anything”.
“The hypersonic weapon has an extraordinary destructive power, near-equivalent to a nuclear weapon - and is precise, too,” said Gurulev, a member of the Russian parliament’s defence committee.
He claimed that the RAF had “decentralised” its warplanes to different locations, fearing a possible attack.
“They realise the number of currently deployed missiles allows destruction of the UK’s entire aviation grouping,” he told Russian viewers.
He was asked by Ruslan Ostashko, Channel 1 presenter, whether Britain was currently preparing for war with Russia.
“Yes - they are preparing for the war with us,” Gurulev, 54, replied.
“The whole situation is not about Ukraine.
“We are not fighting Ukraine, we are fighting our British ‘friends’ and [the USA]….
“Let’s make it super simple .
“Two ships, 50 launches of Zircon [missiles] - and there is not a single power station left in the UK.
“Fifty more Zircons - and the entire port infrastructure is gone.
“One more - and we forget about the British Isles.
“A Third World country, destroyed and fallen apart because Scotland and Wales would leave.
“This would be the end of the British Crown.
“And they are scared of it.”
Gurulev was formerly deputy commander of Russia‘s vast southern military district, and is now a reservist general.
Regular TV threats by Putin’s propagandists to strike Britain are seen as a sign of frustration, especially in military circles, over the Kremlin’s leader’s tactics which have seen an estimated 75,000 Russian soldiers killed or wounded in six months, while making relatively small territorial gains.
Moscow holds Britain responsible for galvanising the West to stand solidly with Ukraine, and also to provide arms to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
