A pregnant woman who became a symbol of Ukraine’s suffering when she was photographed being carried from a bombed maternity hospital has died along with her baby.
The unnamed mother graced the covers of numerous newspapers and online sites across the world over the weekend as she stroked her bloodied belly and stared blankly in shock, as she was carried on a stretcher by emergency services from the rubble of the Mariupol hospital struck by Russian missiles.
She was taken to another hospital and was suffering a crushed pelvis and detached hip. Her unborn child was in also trouble.
Witnesses said the woman began crying out repeatedly “kill me now, kill me know” to save her child as medics feared for her baby and were getting set for an emergency caesarean.
Surgeon Timur Marin delivered the baby but it was dead. They then attempted to resuscitate the mother but she died 30 minutes later.
Such was the chaos with the injured from the assault, her name was not formally recorded but medics noted the husband and father of the child came to collect the bodies, sparing them being committed to an ever growing 30m long mass grave in the port city.
HORROR AS RUSSIAN TANK RUNS OVER TRIO
Two men and a teenage boy are dead after a Russian tank crashed their car as they tried to flee Vladimir Putin’s troops.
The incident occurred in the city of Zaporizhzhia, southeastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian police. The car was engulfed in flames after the tank rolled over it, leaving the victims trapped inside to burn to death.
“As a result, two adult men were killed and a teenage boy burned to death in the burning car,” local police said.
Shocking footage of the aftermath shows the destroyed remains of the car on a road surrounded by charred debris.
Across Ukraine, people are desperately trying to escape the war – but are in many cases coming under direct attack from the invaders.
Ukraine’s intelligence service said Russian soldiers fired at a convoy of civilian evacuees from the village of Peremoha in the Kyiv region.
They said in a statement: “After the attack, the occupiers forced the remnants of the column to turn back to Peremoha and are not letting them out of the village.
“Russians shot a column of women and children while trying to evacuate from the village of Peremoha in the Kyiv region along an agreed ‘green’ corridor. Seven people died, including one child.”
The nightmarish scenes come as the Russians get closer to the capital of Kyiv, with some reports placing the invaders just outside the city.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia would only take control of the capital city if they “raze it to the ground”.
Satellite images show Russian tanks and other vehicles heading towards Kyiv, while other aerial footage appears to reveal military equipment being stationed outside the capital.
Images appear to show the infamous convoy of Russian vehicles – that had stalled near Kyiv for almost two weeks in freezing weather – has now “dispersed”, and is on the move again in different parts, breaking up the convoy and making it less vulnerable to attacks.
