The ex-Atlanta police officer charged with murder in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks has turned himself in to authorities.
Garrett Rolfe, 27, who faces 11 charges, including murder, had until 6pm to surrender, CNN reported.
Earlier, Atlanta cop Devin Brosnan, who is charged with aggravated assault in Brooks’ shooting outside a Wendy’s fast-food restaurant on Friday, also turned himself in and was later released on bond.
Fulton County District lawyer Paul Howard, who announced the charges on Wednesday local time, said prosecutors will ask that Rolfe be held without bail, the New York Post reports.
Howard said Brosnan was co-operating with investigators.
Brooks was shot twice in the back by Rolfe after he scuffled with the two cops and fled with one of their Tasers last Friday.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Brooks’ death a homicide.
Rolfe was fired just hours after the shooting and Brosnan was placed on administrative leave.
Rolfe could face the death penalty if convicted.
Brooks’ shooting came less than three weeks after a Minneapolis police officer’s killing of handcuffed African-American George Floyd fuelled nationwide uproar over racism and police brutality.
Fellow officer Devin Brosnan, who has agreed to become a witness for the state in the investigation, also surrendered on Thursday over assault charges, but was released on bail.
Brosnan and Rolfe, 27, found Brooks sleeping in his car in the drive-through line at a Wendy’s restaurant last Friday.
Over a calm 20-minute interaction, they gave him an alcohol test and, after it proved positive, sought to arrest him for driving under the influence.
After a brief struggle, Brooks ran off with one of the officers’ Tasers and, as he swung his arm back to point it at them, Rolfe shot Brooks twice in the back
