Buckingham Palace’s plan to make major change to Camilla’s title

Buckingham Palace is reportedly hoping to make a controversial amendment to Queen Consort Camilla’s title.

Buckingham Palace is reportedly hoping to quietly drop ‘Consort’ from Queen Consort Camilla’s title ahead of King Charles’ coronation in May 2023.

The decision will be dependent on how the public accepts Camilla as she steps into her new role over the coming months, according to The Telegraph.

A source told The Telegraph there is hope of a natural transition in which the public and the press begin adopting the shortened ‘Queen Camilla’ title.

There was a time when honouring Camilla with the royal title of Queen would have been highly controversial.

The late Queen announced in February that Camilla would receive the title of Queen Consort when Charles acceded the throne.

Speaking after Her Majesty’s death last month, King Charles referred to his wife’s title: “I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage seventeen years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort.”

But a new report from The Telegraph suggests aides want to drop ‘Consort’ from the title if there is public appetite to do so.

It comes amid reports Buckingham Palace is said to be rethinking plans for Camilla to wear one of the royal family’s most controversial jewels at next year’s coronation.

The Koh-i-Noor diamond is currently set in the crown worn by the Queen Mother, at her 1937 coronation.

Until now, it had been widely expected to be the crown chosen by Camilla to wear at her husband’s coronation next year.

But the diamond’s inclusion is threatening to reopen old wounds, particularly with India.

India’s ruling party has said the inclusion of the crown, containing the Koh-i-Noor diamond, would bring back “painful memories of the colonial past” for generations of Indians.

Since its arrival in Britain in 1850, when it was presented to Queen Victoria, there have been calls for the diamond to be returned to India.
