Police have arrested a man following an alleged assault at a 21st birthday in Barwon Heads on Saturday night.
A 45-year-old woman sustained life-threatening upper body injuries and was flown to the Alfred hospital in a critical condition after the violent clash.
She remains in a serious condition.
The 55-year-old Cremorne man was taken to Geelong hospital under police guard in a stable condition for upper body injuries.
He was taken into custody and interviewed by detectives after being discharged the next morning.
He has been released pending summons.
It is believed the altercation kicked off when the man tried to stop the woman from gatecrashing the party being held at Ebb & Flow cafe on Bridge Rd just before 11pm.
The cafe’s owner, Trevor Robinson, told 7News people would be “sad and devastated” by what occured.
It’s understood the woman celebrating her 21st has worked at the cafe for years.
Footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence around the venue on the night of the incident, while young women believed to be party guests watched on.
