Road closures will bring parts of the CBD to a standstill this weekend as new tram stops and overhead wires are installed along William Street.

William Street will be closed to traffic, trams and cyclists between Flinders and Dudley Streets from 2am on Saturday, until 5am Monday.

There will be no Route 58 trams running on Peel or William Streets during the works, with buses replacing trams on Saturday and Sunday.

From Monday, trams on Route 58 will operate in sections, between Toorak Road and Market Street and between West Coburg to Flinders Street via Elizabeth Street.

Trams on Bourke and Collins Street will also be affected by the works and commuters are being urged to plan ahead and be aware of the changes.

A statement from the Department of Transport said parts of the network would be heavily impacted.

“This will have significant impacts on tram services, traffic and cyclists travelling in the city,” the statement reads.

“Both motorists and public transport passengers are advised to plan their travel and allow extra time for their journey.

“We thank them for their patience while these important works take place.”

Route 11 and 48 trams, on Collins Street, will run in sections, with no services between Southern Cross Station and Elizabeth Street, stop 5.

Route 12 and 109 will divert down La Trobe street from Saturday to Tuesday night.

And Route 86, along Bourke Street, will be affected from the first tram on Wednesday, to the following Sunday.
