Young girl may have witnessed DV incident that turned fatal

A young girl may have witnessed a man allegedly murder his mother in a “dreadful” incident of domestic violence, a state’s top politician has revealed.

Horrifying details have emerged of a man who allegedly murdered his mother in a “dreadful” incident of family and domestic violence witnessed by a young girl.

On Tuesday, Harley James Jeffries appeared in the Armadale Magistrates Court charged with the murder of his mother in the Perth suburb of Byford.

He appeared in court behind a security glass wearing a blue paper prison suit, restrained and escorted by two security guards.

He was dramatically arrested on Sunday about two hours after police responded to a call that a woman had been seriously injured.

The 61-year-old was found dead by emergency services who arrived at the scene.

Premier Roger Cook told reporters that the alleged attack was witnessed by a young girl.

“That young girl, who actually at this stage appears to have witnessed that event, must be incredibly traumatised by what she’s seen,” he said.

“I’m so pleased and once again absolutely proud of our police force who have managed to apprehend someone.

“Our hearts go out to that family.”

Police arrested Mr Jeffries 200km away from the crime scene.

Police will allege in court that Mr Jeffries fled the scene in a silver Peugeot station sedan and was not seen by police until 9.15pm, 200km north of the crime scene in the rural town of Moora.

A WA Police spokeswoman alleged the man failed to stop after emergency lights and sirens were activated.

The man was stopped in the town of Bindi Bindi – 40km east of Moora – when police deployed a tyre deflation device along the Great Northern Highway.

Tasers were deployed after Mr Jeffries allegedly began acting aggressively and challenging police.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded in custody to appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on July 24.
