WA Police arrest Stoneville man over alleged hit and run in Belmont

A police officer remains in hospital with serious injuries following a routine traffic stop.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly struck a police officer with his ute before driving away from the scene.

A 37-year-old Stoneville man was driving a white Toyota HiLux utility when he was stopped by a WA Police officer near the intersection of Stanton Rd and Epsom Ave in Belmont in Perth about 5pm on Friday.

Police will allege that the man accelerated away while the officer was attempting to speak to him.

During the interaction, a police officer was allegedly struck by the ute.

The police officer was taken by St John WA to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in a stable condition.

The ute allegedly involved in the incident was later involved in a crash near the intersection of Clayton St and Roe Highway in Bellevue.

The 37-year-old man allegedly fled on foot before he was arrested a short distance away.

He was charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm – in circumstances of aggravation, driver failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm, driver failing to stop and ensure assistance received after incident occasioning grievous bodily harm, and reckless driving.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Anyone with dashcam or CCTV of the incident, or the Toyota travelling in the areas around Epsom

Ave in Belmont, or Great Eastern Highway/Roe Highway in Bellevue, is encouraged to contact police.
