YOUTH worker Les Twentyman has called for a weapon exchange program after a spate of stabbings in Melbourne.
He said the program ran in Footscray and Sunshine railway stations with police in 2006, where in two hours 55 weapons were handed over in exchange for football, basketball and movie tickets.
"Knives trash lives and there are lot of nasty stabbings,'' he said.
"We need to educate the community that being armed is not our traditional way of life.
"We need a weapons amnesty, a weapons exchange and an education campaign."
