Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers
An invitation for King Charles to attend the Melbourne Cup this year remains on the table.
The royal visit, his first formal one to Australia, is expected to happen with discussions under way between federal, state and territory governments.
Many at the Victoria Racing Club are keen to host the King and Queen Camilla, with CEO Neil Wilson confirming an invite has been extended.
Charles attended the 1985 Melbourne Cup with the late Princess Diana and returned with Camilla in 2012.
The 75 year-old has been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and is receiving treatment.
The King has made 15 official visits to Australia. His sweet 16th would be fitting at Flemington. Long ago, he raced as an amateur jockey for a brief time — and fell off his horse a few times.
