MOTORISTS have been warned to be cautious on EastLink with large amounts of smoke pouring onto the motorway from an industrial fire at Ringwood.

At least one vehicle has been involved in an accident near the site of the fire at a metal recycling plant in Palmerston Rd this morning.

About 50 fire fighters are battling the blaze that was ignited about 7am in a large scrap metal heap.

MFB spokesman Trevor Woodward said smoke was travelling across EastLink, potentially affecting visibility.

"The smoke is a big concern,’’ he said. "It’s causing a few issues.’’

Traffic north of Canterbury rd is expected to be worst affected.

Community warnings have also been issued in the area and residents told to close windows and doors to avoid respiratory problems.

Traffic on Heatherdale Rd, Ringwood has been affected as crews tap into water supplies to fight the blaze.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.
