Rapper Snoop Dogg to perform at MCG for AFL Grand Final
Snoop Dogg will be the headline, pre-match music act at this year’s AFL Grand Final, with the artist promising to make his performance “unforgettable”.
The D.O-double-G is officially set to Drop it like it’s Hot at the MCG.
Rap superstar Snoop Dogg will on Tuesday be confirmed as the headline pre-match entertainment act for this year’s AFL Grand Final.
The Herald Sun can reveal the AFL has locked in the rap icon behind hits including Gin and Juice, Drop it like it’s Hot, Who am I (What’s my Name?) and Young, Wild and Free to perform to a crowd of up to 100,000 at the home of football on September 27.
The Californian star, who has sold more than 35 million records and appeared at US football finale the Super Bowl, said it was “an absolute honour’’ taking over the biggest day in Australian sport.
“It’s one of the biggest events on the Aussie calendar,’’ he said.
“Can’t wait to bring the energy and celebrate with the fans.
“Let’s make it unforgettable.’’
Securing Snoop is a major win for the AFL which has kicked goals with its grand final entertainment in recent years, with Katy Perry roaring before last year’s showdown and Robbie Williams entertaining fans before the 2022 showpiece.
In a video that will give footy-loving Snoop fans goosebumps, the laid-back entertainer born Calvin Broadus Jr promised to bring his trademark swagger and style to the ‘G.
“One hundred thousand fans and the best two teams, and your boy big Snoop D.O-double-G at the MCG,” he said.
“I can’t wait to see y’all in September for the pre game entertainment brought to you by, me.”
With a national TV audience of more than four million tuning into last year’s grand final.
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon predicted Snoop Dogg would take things “a whole lot bigger”.
“Snoop Dogg is a pioneer, a performer and a true entertainer,’’ he said.
“He’s played to packed stadiums around the world but we think 100,000 fans at the MCG might just be his most iconic crowd yet.
“We want AFL grand final day to be an unforgettable celebration of footy and beyond the four quarters of the match, a celebration of culture, energy, and entertainment.
“Snoop fits that brief better than anyone.’’
On Tuesday Mr Dillon acknowledged Snoop wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but said the global star had the icon factor to wow the crowd.
“You do a (pros and cons exercise) with everything,” Mr Dillon told 3AW.
“There were a lot more pros than cons, and look, no artist appeals to everyone but the feedback I’ve been getting ... he does span the generations.
“He’s global, he’s iconic and he has stood the test of time.”
The AFL boss couldn’t confirm how many songs Snoop had been booked to perform, saying the set list was still being discussed.
“I think the way that Snoop does his music, it might be more songs than we’re used to, but in sort of bits and parts of it,” he said.
“I’m not 100 per cent across that detail because that is still being worked through. That’s a highly creative process.”
Mushroom Group chief executive Matt Gudinski said Snoop Dogg could be the best in a long line of world class acts to provide the soundtrack to grand final day.
“The AFL grand final is the crown jewel of Australian sport and each year they continue to raise the bar in world-class entertainment and 2025 is no exception.” Mr Gudinski said.
“Following unforgettable performances from global superstars Katy Perry, Robbie Williams, and The Killers, this year the AFL is taking it to the next level with global icon and cultural superstar Snoop Dogg.’’
Mr Gudinski hinted a cast of Aussie bands would provide the entree to Snoop Dogg’s main course, with homegrown rockers Birds of Tokyo among acts rumoured to be on the bill.
“My team at Mushroom are currently working closely with Snoop and his team to produce an unforgettable spectacle, that will once again set the standard for live entertainment at sporting events in Australia,’’ he said.
“This news is just the beginning – we’re also collaborating with the AFL to include incredible Australian artists and performers in the pre-game showcase, and we can’t wait to share more soon.”
It will be the first time Snoop Dogg — whose hits span three decades — has played the ‘G.
Mr Dillon said: “From Long Beach to the biggest stage in Australian sport — Snoop Dogg is coming to the MCG, and we’re ready to make history.”
Snoop Dogg last toured Australia in 2023, playing Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
